hoot!

Friday:

Oh boy. I slept in till noon after staying up till 5AM! Got a lot of good writing done. And when I looked up the formatting, I realized that the left margin, because my thesis will be bound, is 1.5". And that brought my paper length to 17 pages. When I was editing it and putting all the chapters on their each page and inserting illustrations, it came to a plush 19 pages. Perfect.

My meeting with Martin went well. We went over a rough outline for my thesis defense. I talked a lot about my experience with Joan's class. It was a beautiful brilliant sunny warm day. But I still went to yoga. Nice and relaxing and held poses. Out of yoga I spent a good two hours editing my paper and whipping it into shape. Printed that sucker out and plopped it in Joan's box. Talked to Daniel a bit. Went home. Had some pasta.

I thought the Odd Owl show started at 8:30 so I left at 7:45 to get there in time. I had never ridden up to Alberta street before. Across Broadway and onto Williams was easy. But then it was a long 20 or so block ride with lots of false "OH is THIS Alberta?" turns. But after a pretty tiring slightly uphill journey, I got to Alberta. And then I got to Alberta Street Public House. No one I knew, or Odd Owl, were there. So I grabbed a pint and settled in. After about 20 minutes Carmen, Phil (of Odd Owl, not printmaker Phil), and their manager Eric came. Yay! Hugs all around. I moved to the venue side of the place (which was a nice hall with movable seating and good acoustics I think) and chatted to them as they brought stuff in. Molly, who went to the Eugene show with me and will be a PNCA MFA student, and her boyfriend Todd arrived. A good crew. The first band had some good little diddies, though I didn't catch their name.

A good crowd came. I think going in the middle of a three band lineup is very much the best. You get the people who linger after the first show and those who come from the last band. It is the peak time.

Odd Owl hit the stage and they were amazing! I snapped pictures using Molly's camera. I boogied. They played new work and old work. I exclaimed "The Way Home!" between some of their songs and they said they would get to it. And when they got to it they said "this one is for Trillian" which made me very happy. That is the song that I did the short animation for. I boogied a little bit. They get better every single time. Just the songs and how they play them and stage presence and general aura of it all. So wonderful! Had a really great night. Had a few beers as well.

After Odd Owl's set Phil and I sat and talked on the other side of the pub (there was one bar section where you get drinks and can sit at tables, and then in another sort of room is the venue hall). Carmen joined us. Pretty soon it was time to pack up because the place was closing. Option one was to hug and part ways and option two was to load my bike in Molly's pick up truck and hang with the five cool people at her place. I went with that option. After some shuffling of people between cars and dropping one off in a lockable studio place we arrived at Molly's place. We popped open a couple more beers and chatted into the late hours. Another option was presented to me: ride home at 4am or sleep on the floor on a mat and in a sleeping bag. I went the the latter.

Friday's Portrait is: Stephen Fry.

Saturday:

Woke up early because people were shuffling about. The sleeping bag was surprisingly cozy and the ground wasn't all that bad to sleep on. I guess I spend a lot of time getting comfy on mats in yoga. Molly made tea and Carmen had some scones. Believe me when I say these were the best scones in existence. Fantastic. We went for a walk and enjoyed a bit of the bright beautiful day. Stopped in at a book store. Molly lives on Broadway and 20th or so, which is hella convenient for me. At noon we said goodbye to the awesome Odd Owl. I must visit Carmen in San Fransisco this summer. Take a week. I think that would be greaaat.

It was a perfect ride back. Not too hot, not too cold. And sunny. The shower I had when I returned home was marvelous.

I decided to allow Saturday to be a chill day. Take a breather. I did go down to the studios to try and catch Eva, but she wasn't available to be drawn. So I conversed with Mel instead. Then I went back home and prettied myself up. Rollyn picked me up at about 6:20 and we drove out to Tigard. His friend Aaron, who is also a director he works with frequently, bar tends at this Mediterranean restaurant. We sat at the bar, I had a kabob, and chatted with Aaron and his assistant director Caroline and other folks. It was a nice night. There was also a belly dancer that performed. I gave Caroline one of my posters. It's always awesome to meet super nice people. Chatted movies and stuff. Rollyn was a bit tipsy still, so I drove us to the theater to see Hanna. His Honda Fit has very sensitive breaks, and it is a small car like the Prius. And the roads out in Tigard are like those in Poulsbo and Bremerton. That is to say easy driving. None of the complex downtown stuff. It was fun to be behind the wheel again.

Hanna was a much better movie that I was expecting it to me. The great actors didn't outshine the main one. The soundtrack, which is by The Chemical Brothers, set the mood in a very pensive building manner. It wasn't standard action music which really gave the movie a special feel. The colors of the film were crisp and beautiful. The shot layouts were well conceived. And there were some impressive long shots. It was just really well made. Not the most original of plots by a long shot, but because it was so well made I ended up enjoying it a lot. That is how you do an action movie. Rollyn invited me to be an extra on a film shoot tomorrow, but I passed. Time to get back to printing!

Tumblr is totally thesis

I'll make this quick, because I have to get back to paper writing.

Got up early. Hate that. In class we went over the sketches. Mine were not so impressive, but there were some cool things happening. I left my wallet at home so I biked home during lunch and grabbed it and then got a burrito. Sat in the sun and ate it. The rest of class was a work time. I didn't get that much work done though...

Went back home and worked on my paper for a few hours. Found out that Joan won't be collecting our papers till Saturday morning, so I have a bit of leeway in the deadline. Yay! Still will get it in Friday, but I don't have to get it spot on the 5pm dot. Which gives me time to do pesky editing and citations and stuff.

Went to yoga, because I gotta have my yoga. I was asked to demo the head stand, because I'm so good at them. Whee.

Went to the Illustration Juried Show, which I neglected to enter this year because I am lame.

Went to the Spirit Animal Show that I am in. Karen set it up really good and some people were really responding to my work. Actually a couple started talking about my fat cat print right next to me! BT, Mel, and Phil left for a bit to see the Pony Club show. I stuck around to chat with Karen but she started talking to a cute guy and I didn't really have anyone to talk with for a bit. Boo! Chicks before...well you know. Anyway. Mel, BT, and Phil returned. At around 9:30, I returned home and got back to my paper.

Can't wait for tomorrow to be finished! And then it is TWO WEEKS TILL THESIS OH MY GOD.

And tomorrow there will be Odd Owl!

write away

There is road construction and every now and again you can feel a rumble through the apartment. It's a little bit off putting.

Had some nutella on toast and tea for a late breakfast, and followed it up with a frozen rice and chicken and egg scramble. Moved my computer to the kitchen desk, because then I'll be less inclined to waste time dancing to music in that silly stupid private way that I do. It's serious paper writing time! With maybe a little adventure in the evening.

Worked on my paper. Lots of editing and moving around of this and that. Rephrasing. Inserting longer explanations. I dunno, it still lacks big research holes, but I don't quite know how to back certain things up.

I took a beer break and met Sam at Tugboat for a couple pints. Nice to get out and get away from it all. Then went back to it. I'm not as far along as I would have hoped. There are some times I feel really good about what I am writing, and other times where I don't feel that good. The portrait section is the best and I can see how things are starting to get tied together. I'll also be sending my paper to Kirie for some editing, so that will get a nice fresh set of eyes on it. Once I get this paper in on Friday, it is PRINT PRINT PRINT till I collapse. All though not really because I can't print when there are classes. So then it will just be draw draw draw. I see a lot of late nights. 9:15-2am printing blocks. It is better than getting up early. Ha.

Just have to do this damn paper.

teaching the youth of tomorrow (all though I think many were my age and older)

Got up at a magic, not noon hour. And got lots of stuff done. Dishes, tidying up, showering, and all that jazz. It is good to set ones apartment affairs in order. All though my laundry is still in its basket.

Another nice day.

Before I knew it, it was time to head to Joan's Art and Design in Contemporary Society class. She asked if I would give a little talk about my thesis and we would have a discussion, and I agreed. I got all glammed up and wore my favorite Celia shirt (the red loud one with the great print) and headed down. Arrived right on time. It was a great experience, because I got to talk my experience and sound all educated and informed about the ways of education, all though I probably came off as a bit preachy but HEY I've yet to pull an all nighter so I must be onto something. I talked about physical art in the age of the internet and my theories, talked about community, talked about process. And the class had some great questions for me. Such as the nature of the relationship to the subjects (namely, will I get to know strangers for this project and I said no because the better I know someone, the more knowledgeable the drawings will be) and the vagueness of the word community and all sorts of good stuff. I think Joan tried to close down the conversation early a couple times but I kept going. It ended up being about 30-45 minutes worth of talk. And I felt I discussed it well enough. Honest enough is what I mean. And I gave away some more posters, and hopefully they will come to my thesis defense.

Back at home I worked on an outline of the conversation topics they brought up, worked on outlining the new research I'll put in, and generally worked out the game plan.

Then I went back to school for yoga and did a successful headstand! The kind where you are putting your weight in your elbows and arms and the head is sort of a kickstand, but no real weight is actually in it, and then you put the rest of the body up in the air like you just don't care. I got right into it on the first go too, and the class was delighted by the pitter patter of my steps as I got myself into the position. You basically put your head into your clasped hands, but not ON the hands, and have the elbows shoulder's width apart and then you straighten your back up and into your arms and then straighten your legs so your body is in a V shape with your butt in the air, and walk your feet in till you can feel your weight shift into your arms. Yeah. I did it twice up and down successfully but on the third I flopped forward. But no harm. HEAD stand, not hand stand.

Back at home, I encouraged Tabitha and Kristen on as they practiced their thesis performance. And showed off my headstand.

Tomorrow is a writing day. It will be long, but I have a good game plan.

not all that creepy, really

Got to school and checked my school email and then found out class was cancelled. Should have checked before I left. Duh whoops oh well. I took the time to scan all the David Hockney articles so that I could finally return the book to the library. I also scanned in some of the illustrations that I plan to reference in my text.

It was rainy. Boo. There is a new show called The Killing, which is an adaptation of a Danish show called Forbrydelsen. It is about a murder. The adaptation is set in Washington, which makes the show yet another in a long line of shows and movies that depict the Pacific Northwest as rainy, creepy, gray, and full of trees. And sure it is rainy and gray and full of trees, but not nearly as creepy as shows and movies make it out to be. I'm waiting for something happy to be set here. That would be nice. Anyway, I watched the first few minutes of The Killing just to see if its good. I didn't even know it was relocated to Seattle in the adaptation, but that became really evident just from the saturation of color and gratuitous shots of trees and rain. I intended to just watch a bit and get on with stuff but ended up sucked into the show. Now I have to wait A WEEK for more. Gaah. Guess I'll just have to work on my thesis in the mean time. Booo.

So I worked on reading. Went to Trader Joe's for some food provisions. They didn't have any seaweed snacks on the shelf. Booo.

Tomorrow I'm going to speak to Joan's Art and Design in Contemporary Society class about my project. I don't know what I'll say so I reckon that is incentive enough to get up early and plan my stuff. Sort of a practice defense. Get some good discussion. Give away some posters. Get the youngins interested in Focus Week.

thesis thoughts

I'm having trouble keeping my eye on the prize. My mind is in June right now.

But I did get down to reading and research. Watched some great Art:21 videos that had some artists talking about work and got me thinking of how to relate it to my own. Read a great interview with Ellen something. She was a bit condescending but there were some great bits to pull.

Had some rice and seaweed wrap for lunch and a scramble for breakfast. Accidentally took a totally unneeded nap while reading though.

I'm going to climb into bed and read.

I think I want to learn how to ride a motorcycle.

The full draft is due Friday. Wednesday is a writing day. Thursday is an editing/formatting day. The next two days are research, blurb, idea sorting out, editing what I have, and piecing it together days. I'm starting to formulate supplemental thoughts for my paper. I don't know what we are doing in class tomorrow, but I think I'll figure out how to get pictures into my paper, because I need pictures. I feel behind, but I also feel fine with where I am. Like, I know I'll get it done and I'll be happy with what I finish. I'm pretty happy with my paper, even though I don't think I'm answering the required ambiguous questions about what it MEANS.

Maybe I just feel guilty that I don't feel thesis is the hardest thing I've ever had to do. Sure it takes a lot of thought and reading and piecing things together, but that isn't hard. It is just time consuming. You have to spend a lot of time thinking and resolving issues and it can be a challenge to do that, but it isn't the greatest challenge I've faced. I guess because it isn't an emotional challenge. Some of my comrades seem to be facing emotional challenges with their thesis. Am I not invested enough? Or am I invested the right amount because I know this isn't the end all be all. It is just the end of my stay at PNCA. And even then, it isn't the end of that. I'll be doing some little things after thesis but while I'm still at school. And you never really leave PNCA, you just become an alumni. What you do after comes back to PNCA, as you are a product of the institution, in one way or another.

I'm just sort of rambling right now.

Should thesis be the hardest thing? I don't think so. It should be a challenge, but it shouldn't be near impossible or unreachable. That is just a path to misery. But nothing ventured, nothing gained? I guess I feel that the art I'm producing, while I love it, it just isn't a great...triumph. The work comes easy. That probably comes from confidence in knowing what I'm doing. But it isn't that much of an artistic stretch. I'm just formalizing the casual. All though I guess the formalization is what I'm going for. I'm not over thinking final work. Alongside this intense thesises of my peers, there is this gentle kind poster series that is happening. What is that about? Hmmm.

saturday, what else can I say

Realized I left my camera at Karen's, so I went to school to scan my portrait. Also scanned in some of my thesis drawings at the same time. And edited them. So I have three portrait sides prepped. Hurray! So once I get back to printing, I have stuff to print! But first, it is the paper.

It was a nice beautiful sunny day. So nice.

Had a nice chat with Ma.

Kristen will be moving out in June, so I'll probably be moving out at the same time. Moving out to where, I don't know. Ahk, sort of scary.

Did my laundry. Did the dishes. Read a bit. Drew a bit. Lots of "bits". I really like the Ruth Wilson portrait that I did. But that won't be up till April 5th.

oh bed, why are you so lovely?

Uhg. Gosh. It was horribly waking up. I was exhausted and sore. I even had my cell phone alarm set to 10am, and still that felt too early. I kept resetting the alarm at random amounts for an hour and a half and then I finally got up, showered, ate some breakfast. Drew my portrait.

I got to my meeting with Martin right on time. I just took my bag of posters and dumped it out on his table. He said "these look great". We set aside each of the nine and looked at them as a set. He was mighty impressed. Sort of a "yeah, you have the visuals down and it works" meeting. It felt really good. Didn't talk about much, just sort of established where I am, and where I am is "I have a bunch of posters done, HUZZAH". He said he will wait to have a complete set of posters, but that he wanted a Samala one for now, as that is his obvious favorite of the lot.

After the meeting, I wandered and gave out posters. Then yoga. I think I like the Friday classes the best. I slow down the most and it really resets my state of mind. It was a small group as the weather in Portland today was GORGEOUS. Sunny and warm enough to not need an oppressive coat.

I swung by the studio where Karen was stressed and finishing her print.

Oh also, I got a nice print from Dom in thanks for the print I gave him, that is to say the print of him that is a part of my thesis that I finished. Glad he dug it.

Back home I chilled and relaxed. Then 7pm rolled around and I left for the print exchange shindig. I didn't have time to make something, well okay I totally had time I just couldn't think of anything, so I just bought some booze on the way there.

Liz, BT, Phil, Morgan B, Jalissa, Lacey, Asha, Heather, Daniel, Karen, Mel, DeAnne, Diana, Me, Beth, Heather, and some others were there. Some stayed various amounts of time. I drank. I ate. I exchanged. The prints look pretty darn awesome. I even drew some people, and as I sobered up the drawings got better. I may have got art for two to three more posters! Hurray! Asha made a delicious pasta salad that I gorged on. Not all the prints were actually turned in, so I left my edition there to be picked up later when the rest of the prints are in. We didn't play any games or watch any movie, mostly just talked and consumed.

It was a rainy but inconsequential ride home. Now I'm pretty tired and I have a lot of work to do on my paper over the next couple days. Whee.

Oh and it is UK Month at Portraitoday. Whoo!

time tables

6:00am: First alarm goes off.
7:05am: Get out of bed.
7:25am: get dressed after shower.
7:45am: enjoy a scramble
8:20am: head to school
8:45-10:40am: print the final two layers of my spirit animal print. Unfortunately all of the pink layers were misregistered so my whole print is off. All in all, I'm not totally satisfied with the result. It isn't my best piece of printmaking. If I had another week, I would redo it. But I don't have another week. Oh well.
11:00am: CLASS! We went through our websites. The websites are looking good. Lots of different looking sites. We are doing another art director assignment. I was the odd one out, so Kristin Rogers Brown art directed me. I am to illustrate a word or term in three different ways. Color. Detail. No faces.
12:30pm: lunch! I got a sandwich and accidentally ate the whole thing instead of saving half for later.
1:30pm: back to class. Worked on stuff. I folded and editioned my prints. Finally finished up my text sides.
3:05pm: scanned the text. edited the text. printed out the text.
3:somethingpm: went to the print lab. Emulsified screens. Laid out supplies. Exposed three screens. Chatted with people. Printed the color text layer on Leah and Robin's prints. Did the reductive drawing fluid to get them ready for the next layer.
6:30pm: yoga! Leg work! Lots of great fitness stuff. Felt good to work out all the kinks that are forming. Lots and lots of kinks.
8:00pm: gave away posters to people after yoga.
8:15pm: back to printing. Emulsion. Exposure. Wash out. Drawing fluid. Printing printing printing. Folding. Washing out. Lots of Sherlock Holmes.
9:30pm: walked with Daniel to Safeway to get a snack. Chips, Perrier, sweets.
10:00pm: back to printing.
1:00am: finish printing the final poster of the day. Fold it.
1:45am: leave the print studios with three complete posters, which brings my thesis total up to 9 posters.
2:14am: leave the Stevens Studios after talking with Jon for a bit.
2:49am: finish blogging. Very tired.

spring, I'm going to pretend that it is here

Same old same old "I'm bad, I didn't do jack what I ought" entry. Being hard on myself isn't willing myself into working harder so I think I'll stop it.

It was a beautiful day so I rolled up my pant legs and pretended it was spring. Not a freezing cold day either, so it wasn't too off base.

Had lunch with Karen, Mel, Lacey, and Phil at Yur's and loitered about with Karen and Lacey afterwards. Went back home and worked at the text side of my posters. Worked on portrait. Going to get back to the poster text side and the portraits. I want to get another poster finished tomorrow. So I'll be getting to school before my 11am class, and get my screens set up. And maybe print a layer on my spirit animal print. Then class. Then printing. Then yoga. Then more printing. Then slumping home.

a year later, can't think of anything to really reflect on though

It's been a year since that certain specific day. A lot has changed. Place, people, stuff. It is weird to think that it has been a whole year. Time moves forward impossibly fast.

Anyway. Didn't get as much reading done as I would have liked. Ate a scramble. Got the portrait up. Went to school and got the third layer on my Spirit Animal print done right on time. A CE class came in, but I had yoga at the same time so it wasn't like I was planning to print curing the Continuing Education class. Yoga had some good stretches. It went by relatively fast.

After that I went over to see Rollyn. He has been living it up in Hawaii for the past two weeks. And before that he was in Vegas. So I haven't seen a whole lot of him. Plus I'm all busy with my thesis. We watched The Thomas Crown Affair, the one with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. Good little movie, except the music was annoyingly loud and didn't correspond too well to the mood of the scene. Also some of the composite shots were grating. But still, I enjoyed it.

On the way back, I stopped by the walk up McDonald's window (for those who can't go through drive through because they don't have cars, and the front of McDonald's is closed for the night). I've been craving cheap burgers lately, so I sated my craving.

Tomorrow is my wide open day. No obligations except my own effort iPublish Postnto accomplishing something.

teal and orange

I've yet to get ahead on portraits. Once I break free of some sort of assignment or requirement, I sort of go into a slack mode. This productivity stasis. Where I know there is a lot of stuff due soon, but it isn't due soon enough so I don't quite jump on it.

Anyway, spring break is over. Four weeks left.

In class we mainly talked about editing and different ways to cite this and that. I talked to Joan and she advised me on my paper. I need a lot more research but the writing is good. Need to read up on portraiture and the history of portraiture.

After class I went home. Went to Trader Joe's and stocked up on the basic carbs and apples and onions and meat. Had pasta for dinner. Mmm.

But yeah, like I said, project stasis. ALL THOUGH, I did work a bunch on my website. Got into the CSS programming and made the website block wider, so now my art has more content space. That is good. So I guess I was productive with practical stuff. I would say I'd almost call my website done. I just need to put more art work on it, and make some custom graphics. My website is trilliantrillian.com, in case you had forgotten.

Tomorrow is yoga day. I think I'll spend the time before it reading. I have a lot of reading that needs getting done. I showed Joan the Marc Quinn portrait that he does that is a mold of his head that is filled with his own blood, frozen, and the mold peeled away. The work has to be kept refrigerated. It is a really disturbing piece. Anyway, I need to make a longer list of portraits and portrait artists to research. The main body of my paper will be portraiture. Joan mentioned that the gift part of my project is what really sets it apart, so I will be keeping those other chapters.

There is an hour and a half block of time in the silk screen studio during which I may squeeze in some printing. Just one layer. And afterwards do the yoga thing.

I should get up early. All though I should stop saying that.

doing it twice

Cripes, it is 1:48am already? Time flies.

The alarm went off and I awoke to being very very sore. My arms hurt and my chest muscles that connect to my arms hurt. And my stomach hurt. So much muscle activity yesterday. But that at least means that I was pushing my body.

Had a slow start due to being so sore. I decided to spend the day with my print for the Spirit Animal Print Portfolio. Needed a break from thesis. So I went to Utrecht and bought paper and went so school and scanned. Finished listening to Hunger Games. The last book was very depressing, but a good end I think. Moved on to Sherlock Holmes for the time being. A Study in Scarlet took me through printing images, cutting paper, another walk to Utrecht because I didn't buy enough paper, to Cha Cha Cha for a burrito, to exposing my screen, to emulsifying a second screen because the exposure didn't work out on the first one as it turns out. I didn't notice that it had washed out more that it should have till I started printing. The set backs made it so I only got two layers done. Because between layers I had to do the drawing fluid emulsion resist stuff. My print will be three drawing fluid reductive layers, one spot color layer, and one line art layer. I'm really excited for the print.

Got home at 10. Ate some popcorn and cocoa. Watched tellie. Did my nails. Da Vinci's Inquest is on Hulu. I watched so much of that show back in Seabeck when I couldn't sleep. Okay not "so much" but it was always on at weird late night hours. It's a crime show set in Vancouver Canada. Sort of gritty and lacks the technology glamor that CSI and the like have. Which is why I dig it. So I've been watching it in order. I've only seen the odd episode here and there (and the same episode three times, which seems statistically unlikely for a show you don't watch regularly because it comes on at odd hours).

Spring break is over. Now it is final countdown time. DUH DUH DUH. FOUR WEEKS LEFT. CRAP.

way up high, two feet off the ground

Oh man, what a busy full exhausting day!

I got up at the magic impossible hour of 7:30am. Had a light breakfast. Showered. Got to the print lab at about 8:30. Got right to printing. Finished the Mel poster. I was three fourths of the way through the Beth poster when I was informed that there would be a Continuing Education class in the lab. BOOO. So I finished up the poster right quick and folded and editioned the two posters in the other lab. Robin was there as well. I was hoping to finish all four but it was for the best as I was starving.

It was one of those days that was both sunny and rainy. It came and went. Home from school it was sunny. I had some pasta. Home to the east side, it started to rain as I crossed Broadway. A thick mist of rain. The type that gets you damp all over, but you never really feel like you are being pelted. I am incapable of finding the Multnomah street turn off of Broadway. I've missed it about three times now, so I always overshoot and then have to get my way over towards Lloyd. It is weird to think that Lloyd is within a reasonable bikeable distance. Like 10 minutes off the bridge. I biked in a circle and eventually got onto 12th and rode that miserable, shoulder shaking, teeth chattering from the road construction road down to Burnside. I locked my bike up and spied Toon approaching. We exchanged an enthusiastic hug and got to catching up, but still had the same level of closeness like it hasn't been ages since our last hang out.

She invited me to a beginning drop in class for aerial gymnastic fitness stuff. You know, that stuff where there are large silk ribbons hanging and people climb up them and spin and stuff? Yeah. The class was her treat. I signed a lengthy health waiver and got my exercise clothes on. We did 30 minutes of stretches. Lots of leg work. I'm glad yoga has kept me spry. Still, this was a lot of core building stuff that...well I have no core. No arm strength, no abs. I have strong legs though, probably. Strong enough that I can bike a few miles and not have wobble leg.

Not being able to really lift my own body weight really hampered my learning, but I soldiered on. There were a couple ladies in their 40's who casually mentioned that they did parkour. It was about half and half beginners and experienced people. I didn't feel so self conscious about being bad. It takes a lot of strength and finesse. It is a lot of taking slack and wrapping feet around lengths of suspended silk and clamping. I would love to try it again, but only if I had arm strength. I did get the hip lock. And after lots of failure, I got the foot lock as well. There was this stuff that we sprayed on our hands to get a better grip on the silk as well.

The class totally...just wiped me out. And I was only really on the silk a third or forth of the time. I don't think I could take any more though. Needed the breaks. Much respect to the dancers who make it look so effortless.

Toon and I went to Fire on the Mountain for a celebratory wings lunch. We gabbed and caught up. I got on my bike and had only a slightly better time getting to Broadway. It is weird how I'm just now figuring out Portland on bike, after I've been here for nearly four years.

I decided to go to school and print instead of passing out at home. I was pretty exhausted but I got into the rhythm of it. Callouses are starting to form! I finished up Samala and Acey, but didn't have the energy to fold and edition them. I'll do that tomorrow. I finally went home and slumped into a chair and chilled and hydrated and enjoyed me some Advil. I watched this great documentary called Yank Tanks, about the lengths that people with go to in Cuba to keep cars from the 50's running. I also worked on my spirit animal for the spirit animal print exchange. Since I've been going full out on thesis printing, I think I'll just print the spirit animal and work on the text. Edition and fold, but no thesis printing. Thesis drawing, yes. Thesis reading, yes.

It feels good to accomplish something before noon. "Think of what you can get done if you didn't sleep so much, Trillian" my mind says. "zzzzzzzz" logic says.

Ma and Pa, I'll let you know when I get my Focus Week time slot. I requested early in the week though, so I can get it over with. But who knows.

x4

Didn't get that great of a night's sleep. My schedule is all out of whack. Only got to sleep for a bit before the 8am alarm went off. Rolled out of bed a bit after 11. Had a bagel and shmear and some tea and powdered water drink. Community was fantastic, as was Parks and Recreation. Finished up only four text sides, but that was enough for the day as it turned out. Got to school after 3. Scanned, printed. Went to the lab. Emulsified. Exposed. Set up my station. Not a very crowded studio. Mel came and printed. And left. I listened to Mockingjay. Lots and lots of Mockingjay.

Printed Mel's color text layer. That went well.

Printed Beth's color text layer. That went well, all though some of the tape kept coming off.

Printed Samala's color text layer. Had some issue with the opaqueness of the ink I was using. Hate opaque ink. But got it done.

Printed Acey's color text layer. Went really well.

Washed all the screens out and drew in the water resist for the second blank ink layers. Exposed. Washed out. They are all ready to be printed tomorrow. Another four hours and I'll have four more posters finished. Yaaay. I'll be getting up early to do that, because Lindsay, aka Toon, aka my first roommate invited me to a beginning Aerial class. You know, with the ribbons and stuff. So I'll be doing that tomorrow afternoon. And afterwards I guess I'll fold and edition prints. Bleh, have to get up super early. So I'm blogging now.

Have to work on my spirit animal print.

mmmmmcqueen

Let myself sleep in without the alarm clock. Which was a bad idea because I slept way way in. Need the alarm to check myself.

Worked a bit on stuff. Mostly took a long time to get warmed up to doing anything.

Yoga was just Fawn, Ruth, and myself. Lots of back bending, which is good.

Went to the east side for a get stuff done night. Whooo! There were a lot more people over this time. Robin, Diana, Lacey, this dude John, this dude Michael, Evan was there for a bit, and of course Phil, BT, and Karen. We watched The Great Escape. That hunk Steve McQueen. And that guy with the big forehead that I know mom likes. David McCallum. I worked on my text side. I have seven names done, about four nice words and a couple blurbs. Need to get more done. I stayed for another movie, though Karen took most of the people home. Karen made tacos. They were good. I left at around 2am. Got some work done, should be further along. I'll need to get to school by at least 3pm tomorrow. Seven hours to scan, print, emulsify, expose, and print five layers. The printing should go super fast. The more screens I have prepped, the faster I get through each layer. I think I did three layers in two hours last session. So yeah. Long day. I'll have to get up at an actual hour and finish five of the compliment sides.

I also have another print exchange to do, but that will only occupy one screen. I'll work on that drawing tomorrow night, because the school closes at 10.

Work work work. Listen to audio book listen to audio book listen to audio book .

wednesday

Got up a bit early but was largely unproductive for the first chunk of the day. Ate nutella and toast and chocolate croissants for breakfast. Drew me some Walton Goggins.

Got to school around fiveish. A bit later than I wanted and with less work, but as it turns out folding took a long time to do. But I'm getting ahead of myself. In near record time, I printed three layers. I finished Daniel and Heather's poster and I finished Jon. TWO DOWN! Seven immediate ones to go and at least six or so more to create. Hurrah. I also finished Leah's side and that looks good as well. I then editioned the two sets and started giving them away. It begins! Tomorrow will be spent in whole on compliments. Can't print what I don't have ready to print.

A pretty good day. Am I as productive as I'd like? Eeer no. But tomorrow is a Get Stuff Done night at BT, Berger, and Bone's (BT, Karen, and Phil) so I'll draw people there. And work on compliments. Huzzah. Friday Karen and I will go see Rango. And Saturday there will be karaoke. But I will also be productive and work. Friday and Saturday I will print what I make tomorrow. If I get five compliments, that is five screens. I can easily print five layers in one day. By Sunday I could have seven completed posters! And Sunday I could print the remaining two. Damn, if I could get all nine posters finished by the end of Spring Break. Wow. But I don't want to set myself up that high, because if I don't reach that, I might be hard on myself. But I can see the schedule working itself out. Just have to be really productive tomorrow. But man, if I do do that then I'll be in such a good thesis place. So good. And I'll get through Mockingjay as well, which is the third in the Hunger Games series.

Got home at around nine. Had a salad and orange juice for dinner. Bleh, healthy. Don't worry, I had some candy as well. Drew some portraits. Need to get on top of them again, the last two were drawn the morning of (and todays came up after 3:00pm). Now I'm tired. Report to y'all tomorrow night.

Todays Portrait Is: Walton Goggins

should work harder though...

Whooo got stuff done and had tacos!

Got up at 9:30ish, like some sort of miracle. Showered and got all cleaned up. Went to Trader Joe's for some supplemental shopping. Had a scramble. Got to school later than I wanted to. Emulsified two screens. Printed the first Jon text layer. Exposed screens. Printed the Leah color layer. Printed the first Heather & Daniel text layer. Put on the drawing fluid over the text layer. Got into my yoga gear with time to spare. We worked on hip openers and hand stands. Against the wall hand stands, not free form. I need more arm strength.

After yoga I put emulsion on the screens and let them dry and exposed the screens and washed out the drawing fluid. Hurrah!

Tomorrow is a really open day. So early on I'll work on three more text compositions, then I'll go to school and put them on screens and print as much as I can. Huzzah. Getting stuff done. I'll have two finished thesis posters by the end of tomorrow. Maybe more? Need to do more hanging out though.

Anyway, after all that it was time for tacos! Dom bought da beer and I cooked up the beef. He's all lactose intolerant and stuff, so all the cheese was for me. We gnawed on tacos and watched The Social Network. Good back stabbery drama. Well acted. Well shot. We said our goodbyes after that.

I'm almost done with Catching Fire, the second of the Hunger Games series. SO GOOD. Young adult stories also read (well, listen) really fast. Did da dishes. It is good to have a clean sink.

edging forward...towards the bar

Another slow start to the day. BUT I managed to be productive for the middle chunk. Got two text sides done, and once I know how to do one then I know how to do the rest. So I went to school and scanned those and edited those (and the sketch I did of Leah) and printed those out. I emulsified some screens, all though when I exposed them some of the inverted text didn't do so well. It wasn't opaque enough. Oh well. I have three unexposed screens for tomorrow to expose, and two that are ready to print. I'm so close to finishing a poster! I printed both sides of Acey in what seemed like record time. Mel and Carla were working in the studio as well.

I'm just breezing through the printing stage. So tomorrow I'll print Leah's poster and print Jon and Heather & Daniel's side and then do the water resist emulsion for the second layer of Jon and Heather & Daniel's. If I get to school around Noon to One, that should be plenty of time. Four printing hours, one to two for technical stuff and set up. Whoop!

After printing I returned home for some food, and then I went to Yur's at around 11:30 to chill with the people. There was a design group and an illustration group at opposite sides. I hung with both. Talked to Alex and Mark and Jon and Dom, and also Chloe and Mel and Ashley and uhh...that other guy. It was a good night. I was there till last call even. Tomorrow night Dom and I are going to eat tacos and watch The Social Network. But before that: printing! and yoga! productivity! hurray!

And for that to happen, I'll have to get up at like...10. And stuff. which is totally doable.

first paper back, whoo!

Spring Break already feels like it is slipping away really fast and I'm not as productive as I should be. I did start on the compliment side of the portraits. Got a couple text treatments and such.

Went down to school and hung out with Leah and drew her. So that brings the portrait count up to 9. Huzzah! But I really need to spend my time finishing my posters.

Went to Trader Joe's and got hella fruits and vegetables. Now that I eat more salads and apples, my body really feels it when I don't intake them and eat mostly carbs.

I think I'm going to go to bed early (compared, 2am isn't really early but it is earlier than 4am which happens more than it should) and make a real effort to get stuff done tomorrow. Get stuff done, scan it, send it, print it.

Finally got my first paper review back, and the feedback was good. "Awesome paper writing skillz! Great voice and clarity." And some stuff about more citations and research and explaining this and that. But it is nice to know my paper isn't a complete mess or anything. Excited to get my other three floating edited papers back, whenever that happens. It is good to know that my copies do indeed have my name on them. I was worried about that when it had been a while and I had not received any back.

Yesterday I filled out my spot in the focus week form. Put in my blurb and desired room and set up parameters. Totally insane to be AT THAT POINT. Just need to start finishing these posters. I'm so close to that point. So many halves. So many audio books to listen to. Almost done with Hunger Games. Excited to listen to the rest of the trilogy. Listening to it while I while I'm productive is a great incentive to be productive.

Mmm salad and apple and banana. Very good!

doo doo doooo the other things that need doing

Didn't really touch on any thesis stuff today. Spent the day sorting out the apartment and stuff. Did a lot of dishes (though most of them were done by Mark and Kristen, I just did the rest of the accumulated dishes). Put away my laundry. Tidied my room. Put another henna wash in my hair. I think I'll go for the more red block of henna from Lush next time. It was a nice touch up. Didn't give me a headache like the last time, though I used considerably less of the stuff this time around. I just used the bit remaining from the block of henna I bought for the first dye. The color may be very subtle, but my hair feels good. Mmm.

The library is closed during Spring Break. Boooo. That is such crap. I can't believe how fast time runs out. But taking a chill day to sort to things was much needed.

Went to Fred Meyer's and got some soap and cotton balls and creme cheese and aluminum foil and other things.

Did a couple more portraits.

Been listening to Hunger Games. VERY good. Very invested in Katniss and Peeta.

a day for junk food

When I woke up and saw that the alarm was 11am, I swore loudly because I thought I was missing class. Then I realized that I had no class on Friday and said so. Kristen laughed from the living room. So I went back to sleep. I ended up sleeping a bit too much in so the first few tasks of the day were rushed. I went to Trader Joe's and got a frozen meal and some snacks to sustain me. Went to school and grabbed a pop tart and my beloved Propel powdered water. I also like Emergen-c. I tend to drink at least one powdered drink thingy a day, and the rest of my fluids are usually just water.

Anyway, at school I scanned in the drawing of Beth and edited it. Oh, I also finished listening to Shades of Grey by Jasper Fford. Very good book about a society with a hierarchy determined by the amount of colors one can see. Now I'm listening to the Hunger Games trilogy. Everything listens so fast compared to Game of Thrones. Those books were LOOOONG. Anyway, hauling around stuff gets me flustered. I don't like hauling multiple bags and for some reason I don't like backpacks. I resist using one until I absolutely have too much stuff to fit in my shoulder bag.

I like Friday yoga because it slows me down. I get all rushed with stuff and it is an hour and a half to just take it slow. Tuesday Thursday yoga has more movement, it doesn't slow me mentally down as much.

After yoga, I rushed to the studio to claim dibs on a spot and...

...it was totally empty! There was no one in the silk screen studio and only Asha in the letterpress area. There were some people in the litho and etching lab, but I don't go over there. So I claimed three tables, emulsified four screens, oiled up three stencils, microwaved a meal and consumed it, exposed the screens, washed them out, printed the lineart on the Dominic poster, counted out the sheets for the Beth edition, used up my first ream of paper in the process, printed the Beth color layer in a nice range of blues that match her signature sweater, printed the line art, washed out both of those screens, and was out of the building at 9:50. Beth also came in and worked on her screens a bit.

Back in my studio, I counted out another ream of paper into stacks of 10, so later on in printing I can just grab the number of sheets I'll need. Another task minimized! I'm really getting a handle on how long different parts take. If I am doing any non printing tasks (exposing screens, counting paper, emulsifying) I need at least an hour to do them properly, especially if I need to take food breaks. I can do three layers in three and a bit hours if I have nothing else to do. I wonder what my times will be like if I have people catching paper. Right now it is just me. Having a buddy speeds things up.

Got home and had some pasta. And then taffy and candy cane joe joes. MMMM.

I'll figure out what I'm doing tomorrow...tomorrow.

Portrait of Oliver

Pen drawing with digital color.

olivveeeerrr!

My alarm is set to 8am, no changesies. That is an hour before I would usually set it. More time in the morning is better. Either if it is more time lounging conscious in bed or more time for breakfast.

But since I'm out of breakfast food, I just grabbed a nutrigrain bar and some powdered drink and went to class. We didn't really have a critique. We just had an in class assignment to do an illustration representing a person without doing a portrait of their face. So I picked Richard Hammond and did a portrait of his Opel Kadett from the Botswana Top Gear special. I've never drawn a car before, so that was very difficult. Just did a pen drawing straight from reference with digital color.

Got a burrito for lunch because I knew I'd be at school and needed easy sustenance later.

This "having screens ready to print" thing really works for printing efficiency. In the three and a half hours between class and yoga, I got exactly three layers done on my posters. It's almost down exactly. Just so long as I have the same set up. I set up on a far left table and I spread my pages out to dry across the two tables to my right. The length is exactly ten by two posters wide. So when I fill two tables with prints, that is 20 prints, and that is just over a third done. Then I do another 20. Then I do another 15. It is much better than a drying rack, which frankly I hate. They are on springs and if you are not careful the springs will, well, spring and then the racks go up. And if there are other peoples prints, then they might slide around and stuff. It sucks. Having a full three table spread takes luck and/or getting up early. I'll see how it goes once it gets farther along.

So I got the Samala poster printed and half of the Dom image. Tomorrow I will get Dom finished and Acey printed and Beth designed and applied to screens. After yoga I only have five hours before school closes. Before yoga I'll scan Beth's in and get the color in and print it out and get that oiled up and ready to go. Then yoga. Then applying emulsion. Then exposing (four screens: Acey layers and Beth layers). Then washing out. And while those dry, I'll finish Dom. And then I'll see how much printing I get done. Two hours for set up, three for printing. Stagger home at around 10pm. LOVE IT! That is my kind of day really. Printing and yoga. Wheee.

I'll need to go food shopping before all that. Trader Joe's! Whoo!

After yoga today, I was tired so I went home. Watched Community (it was okay). Ate the other half of my burrito. Watched Parks and Recreation (hilaaarious). Now I shall watch some more stuff, drink some fluids, and go to bed. Big day tomorrow.

glass hug

Watercolor on cut paper glued to glass.

rain returns

Set my alarm, so I can at least pretend to have sleep rhythms. If I'm constantly whacking a snooze, I won't go deep into uncontrolled sleep. That is the plan anyway.

Ended up not going food shopping. Will very much have to do that tomorrow. I'm all out of my prescription eye drops now. Just gotta use the stye remedy. But the eyes seem to be healing well, which is good. Not puffy anymore. Certainly don't hurt.

At 5:30 I scooted down to Rogue to celebrate Heather's birthday. I got myself some tots and a pint of John John. Tasty beer. Daniel was there and Darshon arrived at the same time. Heather's friend Dana came and Tara and her husband and Jim and this other dude. It was a nice little time. Heather has been going to Rogue for her free birthday beer since her 22nd birthday. She is 27 now. I didn't have a present for her. Just a hug.

At 7:45 I rode over to Beth's place and we spent the next three hours watching Friends season 2 episodes and drawing. I drew her and her precious cats Mateo and Salama..Sama..something. Mateo was a massive white kitty and I showed Beth how to do the racehorse with him. She loved it and even tried it out herself. It was a nice night. Got some good drawing done. Now I just need to draw more.

Now to watch some stuff and draw some more stuff. I'm really tired for some reason. Hmm.

Tomorrow is class but also a hard core printing day. Okay maybe not hard core, but I aim to get another four layers printed. Two, maybe three, before yoga. And another afterwards. I have all the layers on my screens, I just need to count the paper and print them. Booyah. That would put my halves up to six, which would mean my thesis is one fifth or one sixth printed! Okay that is counting my eggs before they hatch but it is getting made. I'm so excited. Just need to draw draw draw more more more.

Oh and it is rainy again in Portland. Bleh.

no obligation tuesday

Even though I was totally exhausted, I didn't pass out like I was expecting. Instead it was 2am and I was very restless. So I watched some tellie and then did manage to fall asleep.

Till 2pm. I was exhausted. Today was sort of a "bunking off responsibilities" day. A day to relax, watch stuff, do yoga, draw portraits, and contact people for hang out drawing sessions. And that is what I did.

Contacted Beth, we shall we hanging out tomorrow.

Watched Green Wing, and Glee, and Raising Hope, and Lights Out. Huzzah.

Drew just two portraits, but they were very difficult ones.

Yoga was energizing. That was nice.

There was even some thunder and lighting. Very very exciting.

Also, in eye news, the swelling has stopped. There is still a bump from the blocked gland but with the remaining of my prescription drops it should go down. I think I'll make a doctors appointment for next week anyway. A general check up is in order anyway.

So yeah, a day to chill and refocus. Tomorrow will be drawing and doing that stuff for illustration that needs doing. Tuesday and Wednesday are crappy days for printing. I'll be doing a lot of printing during Spring Break (which is next week, not week after next). I hope to have all seven posters finished by the end and have progress on three to five more. Drawing Beth should provide content for one. I'll go hang with Asha and Eva one of these days. Just hang and draw and draw and get right to printing. I can knock out a lot of printing when I have the time to do it.

Tomorrow I'll also have to go food shopping. I'm down to bread, pasta, and sauce.

made it

Went to bed at 5am. Alarm went off at 9am. BLEH. Took about an hour to get rolling, and then an hour to actually get rolling. I went to the convenience store and bought a Viso. That is an energy drink. Gave me enough pep. Edited my paper for redundancies. Went to school. Threw in the footnotes and a thesis statement.

I'm so tired right now, so this will be quick.

Printed off four copies of my paper and set them out with everyone elses copies. It was a peer review and editing session. We each read and edit three papers of our pick from the pile. First I reviewed Madeline's. Then Nell's. And finally Chase's. I was at a table with Beth, Nell, Antonia, Nico, Portia, Mel, Tabitha, Kristen, Robin, and Jenn. A giggle of girls. It went fairly well. Nell and Beth even bought and shared some fries! I was crashing near the end. I haven't received any copies of my paper back yet.

I sat and chatted with Karen while she cut her business cards. Then I chatted with Heather and Daniel. Now it is 7:51 and I'm tired. Do I eat before sleep, or do I just sleep? Dunno...

Portraiture & Memory

“I think the way I draw, the more I know and react to people, the more interesting the drawings will be. I don’t really like struggling for a likeness. It seems a bit of a waste of effort…If you don’t know the person, you don’t really know if you’ve got a likeness at all…I think it takes quite a long time.” – David Hockney.

We are several billion individuals, all a part of something bigger. A community and an individual cannot exist without the other. A community needs individuals, and an individual that often and regularly interacts with others can not be considered separate from that community. Observation is participation. Community and friendship is what the separate individuals make of it.

Every life lived and spent is unique from one another. Choices and experiences set us all apart, and our interactions entangle us all in many various intertwined paths. Thrice the artist Karen Berger and I made separate decisions that put us in the same situation, and it was the third decision that cemented our friendship. First we met in driver’s education, second in a ballroom dancing course, and third in our choice of college and degree. Our lives ran on vaguely parallel paths without input from one another. Our lives are shifted by our social interactions, no matter how small they still have an effect. Person by person, we make up the whole of our social experiences.

An interaction is not limited to a physical meeting. By simply being around others, a person is interaction. One cannot block the presence of others if they are around them. An observation of an action creates a memory and every memory changes us just by its existence in our subconscious.

As I participate in friendships, I document them through art and writing. Every day is cataloged in my online web log and my sketches commit my memories of events for personal posterity. A sketch is a memory regurgitated, as the contemporary painter David Hockney points out, “When you move your head everything moves with it, and the artist must learn to make very quick notations to fix the position of the eyes, nose and mouth to capture a “likeness”.” As the artist, I perceived something happening and I committed that memory of action to paper. These representations are inhibited and bolstered by my own technique and ability. Memory itself is flawed. A drawing will never be the event that occurred. It is a representation of a memory that has been restricted by the one who remembered it.

My thesis work is based around the documentation of a moment with a friend, and the appreciation for their being that the act of drawing them creates. Notable historical mementos of moments are the works that were produced during the Grand Tour. Taking place in the late 18th and early 19th century, the Grand Tour was an educational journey. Many affluent American and Europeans toured to Italy and the surrounding areas to study. The city of Pompeii was being excavated and proved to be an ideal locale for educational study. As a token of the years spent in study of classic architecture, art, and literature, many of the tourists commissioned portraits of themselves at the sites. Pompeo Batoni was very popular painter for work of this nature. The journey doubtlessly was important, but having the education and experience wasn’t enough for the travelers, as they had to leave with something tangible for their efforts. This artifact became a measureable reflection of a part of what they had accomplished. It didn’t sum up all that had been learned, yet the part stood for the whole.

The subjects I represent are not asked to perform in a constructed or composed manner. They are asked just to have some moments of our time together documented. Through drawing them, I am inexorably placing myself into the composition with them. While no hint of my being is in the drawings, the situation under which they are created puts me in the moment. I am in the full scene of the source for the image, but only a segment of the scene is represented. All of their actions are affected by my continual presence.

Indeed, all interactions are affected by the continual presence of those participating in them. Changes in personalities, I’ve observed, can have a change on the dynamics of a group for a short time. Certain friends can lighten the mood, while others foster pensiveness. Every meeting is a progression of the sum of all the other meetings. What happened earlier in life adds to what happens currently and that contributes to what may happen later. Dynamics of relationships change because experiences change the people in relationships. Each portrait is a representation of a moment in a friendship right at that point in time. It is a culmination of everything that came before it, and will effect what comes after in a near unmeasureable way. It is both my emotional perception of the person and my perception of the moment. What I observe of my friends is ruled by what I look for in my representational decisions. Getting a likeness of their jaw may not say much about a person as much as capturing a movement or gesture might represent. Extraneous irrelevant details are edited out. The art is bound by my memory of the person. All of the work is a portrayal of how I see them. All of my subjects exist in memory, and immediate memory is what I pull from to represent them.

Some drawings show a perception of a memory of a person in a more effective manner than others, and these are the ones selected for my project. The posters I create build up a representation of the members of my community. Each one is dedicated to one or two friends and my portrait of them. Each poster is both a vignette of our relationship and something I have seen in them. The desire to create work that represents a part of my memory of an individual is what spurs me on to make, and in the final state give the work back to the community I represent.

The art that an artist chooses to make is in some way a self portrait. By representing artistic choice, the pieces put forward a part of the spirit of the maker. The willingness to produce subjects of a specific nature speaks to the personality of the artist. Choice itself is a portrait because the paths that are picked out of free will all indicate something about the one who picked them. Individuality is a sum of choices and expression. Where there is free will, making art is a high representation of a personality. There isn’t an obligation to make a piece that wouldn’t have a use beyond aesthetics such as a chair or a lamp. The choice to devote oneself to a creative practice is a tremendous act of free will. Often only the artist is invested in the process at first, and is the one pushing themselves forward to create more art. Triumph in the arts, however the creator defines it, is achieved in an environment where the option to stop is given every single day. As a career picks up momentum, the community that forms around art and artists starts to encourage and push a creator. Agents, families, and gallery owners start to become dependent on the artist to continue to create. If art isn’t the main means of financial support, an artist can make whatever they like. Art is an ultimate choice, and choice portrays the maker.

My favorite conversation topics detail the adventures of my friends. I enjoy talking about the accomplishments of those around me. In reflection of what this might say about me, I have come to many conclusions. One is that I live through my friends. When I know someone who has done something amazing, I feel in a small way that I have participated in what they have done simply by being a part of their life. Second, the achievements of my friends encourage me forward with my own goals. I see those around me getting things done, and it enables me to sort my own drives and goals out. I find it difficult to be unproductive around productive people. It is a team of artists competing in different fields and working together for the greater good of the community. For the first time in my life, I have a solid supportive group. I was a cliché loner before I arrived at art college and with great friends came great ambition. The work that I enjoy producing is that which is representational of my newfound collective of comrades. As we work, I sketch the workers. I draw moments of their lives, and because I am there to make the images, they are moments of my life. The work that I make is a portrait of my life.

My definition of a portrait is a representation that conveys a nature of character of a person or place or object. It is a portrayal of the story, history, or connection that something may hold. A portrait isn’t simply a representation of a face, because a face only shows what a person looks like, and everyone is more than just their appearance. Historically, portraiture is dominated by depictions of appearances. Often incorporated into these portraits are visual clues and symbols to the subject nature. The nature may not represent the truth of the subject, but an ideal they aspire or desire to show. As traditions of portraiture have become less strict, the space for what defines a portrait has been opened up. I came to portraiture because I have always loved drawing people. I am, however, not solely drawing people as representations of their being. The setting, line value, posture, hue, and included items all sum up to their portrait. As we are not just our faces, a portrait often needs more to represent a person fully.

David Hockney, born 1937, is a contemporary British artist. His lengthy career has incorporated many techniques and styles, from his camera lucida experiments to watercolor and oil paintings. Just as Hockney’s landscapes were portraits of a place and time in his life, his figurative portraiture reflects his relationships to his subjects and how they have grown over time. The change in portrayals is most evident in two works of his friend Gregory Evans. In 1975, when he made Gregory Leaning Nude, the details and portrayal are very tender and represent the subject as a romanticized lover. Forty years later comes Gregory Evans, a somber clothed figure. At the moment of this painting, Evans had recently lost his mother. As noted in Sarah Howgate’s essay Portraits, Places, and Spaces¸ “Only a close friend would allow this degree of intimacy at such a private moment and the portrait is sensitive to the subject’s mood.” The two portraits speak volumes about the growth and change of Evans and Hockney’s relationship, as well as represent the different places both the subject and the maker were at the time of the conception of the pieces. Striving toward representing a person in a fitting manner while simultaneously saying something about the person requires immense consideration. The aim of a portrait of a person is to speak into their life, and if it is a representation of someone the artist has forged a relationship with, it indicates a portrait of the artist as well. Consciously weighing the value of certain elements and editing out extraneous details are largely decisions of the artist. What stays and what goes in terms of achieving a likeness are dependent on what the maker assumes of their subject. A portrait is what the portrayer notices and thinks of their subject.

Experience culminates into what forms the basis for the assumption of the subject. Memory is a valuable part of the technique that goes into portraiture.

eye drop heaven

Actually got up at a great reasonable time. I assessed and got to doing what needed to be done. Went to school and printed out my resume and an Urecht application. Heather told me there was a one shot temp position for stock some time in April. So I turned that in. Didn't want to mention it in case a flood of applications happened before I turned mine in. A resume wasn't totally needed, but it was good to update it anyway. Went to Safeway. They didn't have any of the eye drops, but I got some general soothing drops. Turned in my application. Went to Fred Meyers and they DID have the homeopathic stye drops. Not the cheapest, but if they help they are certainly cheaper than a doctors visit. I'm going to wait a bit more. Also picked up some ice cream. Then I went home, dropped my stuff off, and went to get my food for the day. And by that I mean I went to Pizza Schmizza and ordered a pizza and some wings. Chicken! Good for you! Returned home. Ate. Then I got to my paper. It is a lot easier the second time around. I'm writing it from the ground up, but including a lot of the stuff from the first draft. I find it much easier to use the original as a reference and just write it again. It is easier to edit that way, as opposed to editing existing text. I don't know if I'll rerewrite it after this. I'll see how I feel I about it.

My eye is sort of stable. I'll see how it is tomorrow. If it is worse or better. I still have a ton of writing to do, but I have a good list of topics and references to my material. Also my thought process seems much deeper. Or something. Like I have a better handle on it. Tomorrow is a big review. Four copies. Four different edits. I don't know my thesis just yet, but I'm just going to fill out my different chapters for now. Get the bulk, then the cause.

I don't think my version of Word has the editing powers that are needed for a research paper. I think I'll have to come in to school early tomorrow and add all the footnotes. I just gotta mark where they are for now. It is going good, though I have a long way to go. I've been writing from bed, instead of at a desk. It is actually nice, though it takes more effort to get up and do stuff.

It would be nice if I got the temp job. The money can go to my tattoo fund! Not that I'm getting a tattoo...but if I did it would be from money that I earned, not the money I receive. Not that I'm thinking about that....but I am. I've been thinking about it for a while actually. There are memories and then there are mementos. And then there are mementos of memories. Uhm...yeah. Mum probably doesn't approve but it is my money and my memento. Maybe I won't get the job.

I'm really lazy for how studious I claim to be

My eye was even more puffy, but it seems to be following suit with the first sty I got. It should be down tomorrow. Spent a lot of time in bed with a warm compress over my eyes. Very soothing. Got up. Did some portraits. Ate some food. I moved my set up to the kitchen table, so I could spread out my texts and stuff. Worked on reading "Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction". It was headache inducing. Did a load of laundry. Took the trash out. Did the dishes.

It is Tabitha's birthday and the party started here. So I chatted and chilled with the people that gathered. Beth, Karen, Travis, Dan, Phade, Karah, uhhm...lots of people. Had a couple drinks too. They left to club or whatever. Now I'm back at the table working. Plugging away at themes and outlines. I have better discussion topics. And I think I'll start each chapter with a quote. Tomorrow looks to be another high stress thesis writing day. I always push this off to the last minute, when I really shouldn't. It's a mighty big part of thesis, this paper.

The hardest part is rolling out of bed.

eye see part two

I haven't been mentioning my eye issues because they've been getting better. The swelling is gone and now just some little bumps remain but those have been dwindling in size. And then I woke up with another stye. So I wanted to get my eyes checked out my an optometrist. But I didn't want to pay tons of cash to do so. I decided that after my meeting with Martin, I would call around to find a place to get my eye checked.

Meeting with Martin went well. Chatted about the mid term meeting. We won't be meeting next week, but I will instead email him some of my text ideas once I get around to them. We didn't fill up the whole usual 30 minutes. Good sign I guess.

So I got to calling. When I got a hold of the place Legacy Health Care recommended, they gave me the name of the eye doctors to cross check through my insurance to see if they are covered. I called my insurance and found out that medical eye exams are not covered. I called the eye place to see about an appointment and found out that an appointment would be $375. NO WAY. So I'm going to search around. Got some great advice about places to go. I also went to Safeway to see if there are some OTC sty medications. There are, but they were all sold out. I think tomorrow I'll go on a search for more. My drops are almost out. If I can get a remedy that remedies, I won't find a doctor. None would probably be open on the weekend anyway, none that were not emergency care. Lame lame lame.

Yoga calmed me down. Then I printed out six more images to turn into prints. Counted 55 or so sheets for Mel's poster. Emulsified six screens. Exposed the six stencils I printed out. Printed Mel in a lovely Mel shade of brown. And then printed the black. The second layer always goes faster. Flats of color always take longer. Talked to Karen. Talked to BT. Talked to Nico. I must have lost some time in there, because I got out of yoga at 5 and finished printing at 9. I guess set up took a bit longer because of printing out and exposing and letting the screens dry and stuff. I've had good luck with the studio crowds. Printing late at night helps. Hung with Karen. Gave Karen the $12 I owe her (we always seem to owe each other money or favors, it's easy to lend to one another because we know the other is good for it) Showed her my prints. Went home.

OH. Well, I'll mention that when it goes through the pipes. Don't want to announce it and create a bum rush.

Aside from the eye, a good day. Printing. Yay. Mel, Heather & Daniel, Robin, and Jon make four. Samala and Dom are ready to be printed when I get an extra couple hours. I want to get all the images I have ready to go printed within the week. So I can get the other side on them when I make the other side.

Next two days will be fun. It is all research paper.

website and getting stuff done

I was screen printing and I thought "it's no biggie staying late and getting things done, I slept in!" and then I remembered that I didn't sleep in and that this is in fact the one day that I am required to get up before noon.

So I did that. Actually I got up at 9! And I got some stuff done! Which was awesome. Got to school on time. It was mostly a work day, a work day that was very much needed. I even worked through lunch, because I had a big breakfast and knew I'd be going home for lunch. Yay for not spending money. In talking to Morgaine and knowing how Jeff's site ended up looking (good) I went with Weebly. Part of the final project for this class is getting a domain name and hosting a site. I've been holding back because a) I didn't know what to pick for a domain name (sorry but, as much as I love being a Spencer, as an artist I just want to be "Trillian") and b) getting a domain and then getting hosting ends up costing moolah. Weebly, you get both hosting and a domain name all for the reasonable $40 a year. It's almost double that on the next cheapest site. Weebly also has tons of templates. It isn't the most individually customizable of sites, but I figured I could make it work. So without further ado, my website:

I'm still working on it, but I'm pleased with the direction it is going. At around 3:30 I went home. Ate some pasta. Watched some TV. Then I went back to school for awesome yoga. Afterwards I printed out some more stencils for my thesis and went to the lab. Set up for printing (that is: printing stencils, applying emulsion, counting paper, setting up table, exposing, washing out screens, and drying) takes about an hour. A little less. Each layer of printing for 55 total prints takes an hour. It's good to know just how much time it all takes. I'm printing 55 because I know I'm likely to fudge up around 5 in a manner that makes them not worth gifting. I left the studio at around 1:30am. School is open till 2am most weekdays. 10pm on Friday and Saturday, which is STUPID. I got the Heather & Daniel side printed and the Jon side. Go me! I want to get all seven halves printed in the next 10. Spring break is coming fast and that is prime work time. I need to get a lot of work lined up. I want to get 10-20 prints done for thesis. 10 is easy, too easy. I'll probably achieve 15. But it would be GRAND to get 20. If I expose screens and count paper sheets at night, I can print straight through in the morning times. 7-11 is open work time because there are no printmaking classes that start before 11. I can get four layers done, if I can just manage to get up at 6am. Which I can do when it calls for it.

I'm half way done with Shades of Gray by Jasper Fford. Great audio book. Just powering through it. Though anything feels like "powering through it" after the epic Song of Fire and Ice series. Those were some long long books. Madeline is now listening to the audio books, so I have someone to chat with about them.

Got home. Put some rice on. Put that rice into sea weed snacks. Popped a beer. Chillaxed. I've earned it. Tomorrow is another mentor meeting. And yoga. And maybe more printing. Probably more printing. I should get as much done during the windows that I can find. I'll print one more half tomorrow, but expose five total screens, so that three are ready to go come another day. Having five screens is AWESOME.

Also my prints look REALLY GOOD. I'm very pleased with them.

dang oh well

I made a to do list of things to do, and on that list was to make a bigger thesis specific to do list. Just to help me keep on top of things. Though I just marginally was on top of things today. Got my Odd Owl piece done. Did the dishes. Forgot to do laundry. I'll do that tomorrow. The day just sort of slipped away from me. Even though the pressure is on, it's still not...there yet.

Tomorrow I'll get some printing done. Just so I have those ready to go. I really like this Odd Owl piece. It's for their new CD.

I'm a champion day waster. I can't wait to be gainfully employed.

It's just this "I'll get serious...tomorrow..." cycle. But I have a massive working draft of the paper due soon so, I can't delay too much. Read more. Outline more. Uhg.

But my art is really coming together. That is good, yeah.

And my eyes are as good as healed, which is good. And my new debit card arrived. Huzzah.

midterm review

Tonight is one of those nights where I don't want to write a thing. I just want to go to sleep or watch TV and chill. Thesis midterm. It is very stressful!

So I accidentally set my alarm to off instead of on. So I slept in. Still, that didn't hinder me too much. I showered. I ate some food (not a scramble though). Looked at my art books and my history books. Wrote some stuff down. Talked to Kristen. At 6 I went to school and ate some food. They provided a free lunch for us. It looked like Tyler Stout didn't even show, nor Adam Haynes. So all that fuss for nothing. Anyway, at 6:30 the reviews started. Mine didn't come around till 8:30, so I set up my studio for the meeting. Mostly putting things into a corner and moving the table out of the way. Then I scanned in some stuff and reprinted a couple things. Then I chilled for half an hour. My panel was Dan, Damien, and Kate. Some designers mostly.

So the review went pretty well. I got a lot of really helpful criticisms from Damien. Dan and Kate were nice. It was a good balance. Got the positives and the negatives. I got some better ideas for the sides of things. The portrait side is there, the conversation isn't. But I got lots of good ideas for how to bring up that conversation. So it was really helpful. It wasn't a disaster or too easy. So yeah, all that stress. And now I'm in a vaguely better place. I'm going to get on with printing the other side though. Just so I have those ready for when I resolve the other side.

Afterwards I went to Yur's. Damien, from my panel, was there as well as another panel member Nick. I sat with them and Dom (after sitting with some classmates who were drunker than me and I didn't feel like conversing with them at that time). They both had graduated from PNCA years ago, which was neat. We talked. I had a beer or two. People left. I joined the design major clan and hung with them and played their games. At after midnight I returned home.

It was a lot of stress, sure, but it ended up being all right. Now it seems like I won't have to do as much public people drawing. Whoo.

drawn out and tacoed

I don't like how my alarm doesn't have an independent snooze alarm. So if it gets shut off and I fall back asleep, I get up less early than I wanted. I was still up earlier than normal. Made a to do list. Got to doing it. Did some portraits. Did some showering. Went to public spaces and drew people (park, coffee shop, Powell's). Need to draw more. Need to go places where there is a large flow coming and going. Went to the studios to pick up some stuff. Ended up talking with Dom and Sivonna. Pitched them my idea for a tv show. Basically it would be like the documentary format that The Office and Parks and Recreation are done it, but with artists in a studio space. They were on board. As were Beth and Antonia and Phil and Mel. Maybe the weekend or so after we defend, we'll just film ourselves and make a little pilot. Yeah! Also grabbed some free food. I ate a lot today. Thats good.

Went home. Did dishes. Cleaned room. Went to Trader Joe's and got taco supplies. Made tacos. Rollyn came over. Just for a little bit, as I had work to do. We ate tacos and watched Portlandia and I showed him some of the stuff I've been working on and the print portfolio. He liked my piece before I even said it was mine. Huzzah! Then he left and I did some more portraits. I'm so ahead, it is awesome. Which is good because after Midterms the only thing I'll be working on is the paper. Have to get that done. I'm way behind. And then its back to the art process. Time is running out...it runs so fast.

Right now...I think I'll read my book. Tomorrow I shall get my studio set up and think really hard about my thesis. Like, really hard. I'm in the last slot of the day (which, come to think of it, I can probably set up my studio in the time between the dinner and my meeting, it's really just rearranging and pinning stuff up, I'm not painting). It starts at 6, and my time isn't till 8:30. Still, I'll set my alarm and get up and be productive. I need to make a massive list of things to accomplish because right now I can't focus on all the stuff that I need to do. It hasn't been concreted. OH! That is what I'll do first thing tomorrow: itemize the next two months of my life.

Next week features Mad Men actors! Minus Allison Brie, who I will be drawing when I get to Community actors.

time to get real

Slept in. Had my toast and tea. Drew some portraits. Went to Trader Joe's. The Girl Scouts were there!! Only bought one box of Thin Mints. Which I will save for after my mid term review. Found out my panel for the review. Tyler Stout will not be on my, he will be on Jon's. BOO! I have some lady from Nordstrom, some dude from Adidas, and some other person on my panel. I don't know if I should be excited or what. I'm not really nervous though I think when it comes to actually preparing myself, I will be.

Went to school. Printed out my print layers. Finished printing the line work on the Robin layer. Exposed a new set of screens. Got 15 test posters done. Talked to Mel. The emulsion is down to the dredges, so I had to apply it using a card and not a trough. The emulsion is also going to crap and doesn't hold up under the pressure. Mel had some of hers wash out where they were not supposed to. Mine almost did, but I stopped with the hose just in time. Laaame. The posters look great though. Really love the look of them. Can't wait to get the panel input. I kind of am really happy with where the design is. Normally I remove the emulsion from my screen so that my screens are always clean, but I left it. So that if I get the go ahead, I can just print the rest and not have to reexpose. All though it isn't really a "go ahead" but I'd like to have it reaffirmed by other people. Though the people I've shown it to dig the way it looks. Can't wait to print more. Though I'm now realizing how much printing that will be. I asked Patsy if I can use some of her screens in her absence (shes in LA), and she said YES! So now I have five screens. I think the first step will be to print a ton of the flat color sides. Just print a whole ton of those suckers. Saves time on applying emulsion and exposing another screen and clean up later on. And if I can enlist some help and expose a couple screens, all the better. Each layer on an edition of 50 is just under an hours worth of work. I want to print 10-20 posters. Each one is 5 layers. So thats 5 hours a poster edition, so thats 50-100 hours worth of printing. I have seven portrait sides designed, and one concept for the anonymous side. So I have to do a lot more drawing as well. It's going to be work work work from here on out. At least I have five screens now! And lots of time thanks to being unemployed and part time. I think I caught enough sleep the first half of this semester.

Got home at around 11pm.

Oh and also I have to do that paper.

Dinner was a nice salad. Watched me some Parks and Recreation and drew stuff. Tomorrow I don't know quite what I'm up to, but I'm sure to be busy. Oh I think I invited Rollyn over for tacos. Hmm. Might have to cancel. But I really want tacos. I'll get up early. Incentive to be productive? Or should I be a grown up. Class before....dudes.
