shut the [screen] door

The train was late coming in and it rained all the way there and back. Still not a bad rain. We grabbed some bagels and cheese and meat slices and had a late dinner.

It was raining again today but ever so softly, so we ventured out anyway. First stop: Powell's and it's wonderful world of books. It was very crowded, enough so that I started getting anxious. Llyw bought a steampunk book and we waited for the 20 to arrive.

The 20 took us to 28th East Burnside. We walked down from there and found ourselves at the Velveteria. Portland's premier gallery for velvet paintings, and it boasts the largest collection in the United States...or maybe the world. It had some 350 paintings and a great sense of humor. There were some fabulous rancheros and sad clowns a plenty. They had a massive collection of this one guys work, unfortunately I have forgotten his name, anyway they were really amazing paintings. Velvet doesn't seem to last long so one wonders why choose it as a medium. There was also a black light room. It was very cool.

We planned on going to The Screendoor for dinner but that didn't open till 5:30, so we waited an hour or so in a coffee shop. I drew and sipped hot chocolate. We emerged and found a line at the restaurant. Naturally there would be a line, it is a fabulous place. The line was just the people waiting to start, there was no one seated already. The waitstaff were quick to get everyone seated and everything went quite swift. I ordered a lemonade with a little something something in it. We had chicken tenders and sauce for starters. Llyw ordered the jambalaya, I had the pulled pork sandwich. Both were effortlessly delicious. For sure we had left overs. Caught the 20 back no problem.

Our route home took us past the Hybrid Gallery, which is the new PNCA space for installation in the Indigo building. The gallery was open and Liz was there so we popped in and said Hi. Katie's installation was damaged for whatever reason and she showed up while we were there to fix it. Funny how things work out. I shared some of my leftover fries with the poor darling. She got her little piece up and running again.

It had stopped raining for the remainder of our walk home. Taking it easy for the rest of the night. Munching on leftovers and all that. The train departs at noon tomorrow. Weekend went by really fast.

team conan

Had a nice sleep in. Keep having nice sleeps. It is good to sleep.

Had a banana. And tea. And lots of stuff. Watched Conan O'Brien and Community.

It is a rainy day. At least it isn't snowy. School starts so soon!

Watched Royal Tenenbaums and a chunk of Life Aquatic.

Cleaned apartment. My vacuum sucks and the other vacuum isn't much better. The floor is the last thing that remains between us and clean living.

Llyw's visiting for the weekend. Leaves on Sunday. I get Monday as a final day and then the final semester of my junior year starts.

what a mess

A slow day. Ate toast and drank vitamin drink while watching Superbad with Katie. Showered. Ate an apple and a tuna fish sandwich. Finished watching Gattaca. I think I definitely liked the first three fourths of it. The end sort of...falls apart a little. I think I'll watch Before the Devil Knows You're Dead next. More Ethan Hawke!

Later on in the evening, Katie and I forced each other to leave the apartment. So we went to Happy Bullpin or whatever. I had a Bridgeport Porter and she had a Blue Moon whatever. And I ordered my first ever chili dog! That sucker was piled with chili and the bottom of the bun exploded and most of the chili fell into the basket it came in. Still I scooped it up, with my hands of course, and piled it back on top of the dog and ate it. Probably one of the messiest meals I have had in recent memory. And I did it all without a single utensil! Katie just sat there and remarked how amazed and proud she was of me. I had a good time. The sports bar was relatively empty. It had so many televisions and some were turned to some bizarre networks.

Now I am just going to pudge out and relax.

Oh and that is Katie on the left and Karen on the right.

whooo!!

Another rather do nothing, stay inside day. I just have no incentive to leave the house.

Got three packages in the mail today. One is oddly canvas shaped and textured, and the other are boxes. One is light and the other is not. Hmmm. I'll wait till Christmas. I mean my Birthday.

Watched some Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Watched some other stuff.

Sat around. Ate chocolate.

Somewhere around 7pm Karen came 'round with a bottle of whiskey. Then the night got started for us three gals (the third is Katie). We had shots and pawed through my back issues of Esquire and chatted. Like classy ladies, except I don't think whiskey is that classy. I'll be sad once school starts and I can't have nights like these anymore. I'll have to work on homework and be productive and get to bed at a sensible hour. Yeah mom is probably shaking her head at my exploits but whatever, I'm having fun and having a great time with the girls and being safe and not leaving the apartment. Karen and Katie left though. They left to walk to a nearby place to have some one on one girl talk, but they returned and the party resumed. And by party I mean we put a movie in and relaxed and sobered up a little bit. The movie was Hot Fuzz, and I think I told them about ten times how mom loved this movie and laughed the hardest at it. Then we three sat on the couch and chatted and drank a little bit more each and got totally girly but still silly.

I love my girls. I have a great bunch of friends who are supportive and awesome and staying in is often a better time than going out. Plus it is cheaper. And by cheaper I mean free.

Need to start planning my birthday. Tomorrow, well today, is Thursday, and the day after that a friend is visiting for the weekend, and then school starts and then it is my 22nd birthday!! I'm officially and totally early twenties. I can't believe that.

Don't know what I will do tomorrow. Read? I'm liking After the Flood.

MMmm apple and water.

25 chickens died for our meal

Slept way way in. Well not waaay in. I had a dream I was pretending to be a vampire and tapping at Terry's window.

Sort of wasted the day. Again. Ate pasta. Tidied a little bit. Last weekend of rest and then it is serious working business.

Katie, Phia, Jared, and I went out for wings! At Buffalo Wild Wings. I had the Honey BBQ because I am a wuss, Jared ordered the spiciest and accidentally touched his eyes. Phia had fries. I only had 12 and just managed to finish. It was delicious and fun. And now we are going to drink and watch Red Sonja.

Yay for holidaaay!!

1:46am edit: so yeah, Red Sonja was campy but it didn't have a good amount of content for the standard drinking rules, like drink for death and boobies and decapitation. Jared and I were conscious the whole way through, and the apparently very tired Phia and Katie fell asleep. I finished my one beer and that pretty much was it for me.

argyle & silver

Set my alarm so that I wouldn't roll out of bed at 1pm on accident. I ended up not finishing Gattaca last night and ended up watching Paranormal Activity with Katie. Really scary, but it didn't leave me so terrified for a long period of time. Very good at building tension.

Ate a slice of pizza for breakfast. Put on my cute new skirt with some tights and rode my bike to meet Jay at Coffee Time.

I arrived about two minutes before she did. Ordered up an italian soda and settled down. She came in wearing glasses, because apparently she has bad vision. We caught up and gossiped and gabbed for an hour and a half. Yesterday, when Jay called she said she had forgotten how I looked so we needed to get together. How nice is that? She showed me her new Jillian Tamaki art book. It was nice.

At about 3:30 we went to Cinema 21. We were the first to buy tickets for Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. I bought a large popcorn, even though Jay didn't want any (it is only 3.50 at Cinema 21!). We sat in the lobby for a while, and before we entered to get seats, the concession guy offered to top off my popcorn again. What a kind fella.

The movie: Heath Ledger's character is introduced by having him hanging in a noose off a bridge. It is his final movie and he died during the production of it. To resolve this, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law were brought in to represent him in the imagination land. It was sad to watch, but truly captured how great of an actor he was. The visuals, set design, costumes, and art direction were on par for any Gilliam movie. The story just meandered like some of his lesser works. So that wasn't as great as it could be, but still. Nice constructed sets. I like seeing that in a movie. Not sure if Jay enjoyed it. She was kind of quiet after, but she had never knowingly watched a Gilliam movie before.

We parted ways at Trader Joe's. I got my usual pasta and sauce, apples, bananas, Emergen-C, and chocolate. The chocolate was leftover holiday decorations. When I got back, I put them up around the apartment. It is all festive now.

My silver fossil necklace broke in Coffee Time. Thankfully I noticed I wasn't wearing it before we left for the movie. The chain broke right at the clasp. Don't know how I will fix it. It has a really nice chain so I don't want to replace it.

Watched House. Good episode. Ate more left over pizza. Now gunna watch another scary movie with Katie: Pandorum.

today part II

Today was a sluggish day. Fed Luna again. Talked to Karen. Talked to Jay. We, that is Jay and I, are going to hang out tomorrow and catch the $5 matinee of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Looking forward to that.

Bought myself some hotwings and pizza for lunch/dinner. Just munched throughout the day. Mmm spicy protein. Watched An Education. The quality of the period setting was nice, the movie had good performances but overall it was just okay. I probably won't remember it in a year. Watching Gattaca. I think I'll be on an Ethan Hawke binge for the rest of the month. Liking it so far. I like good executions of alternate worlds and cool set design and men in suits.

In a week and a day I'll be starting school again. My last semester as a junior. It's pretty intense. Feels like yesterday I was just starting. It goes by so fast. Need to work out the logistics of my birthday.

Katie came home from her party weekend in Eugene.

Still don't have my new bike seat on. I'll give it a shot tomorrow, before I ride out for the movie.

good time gals

uuuuhhhhhhhnmnnnnnnngnggggggg

Which translates to being hungover.

I had three fourths of a generally do nothing day. Shower. Internet. Tidied up the kitchen. Tidied up my bookshelf.

Karen and I planned to hang out. She came over and we decided to go out because it was Saturday night. I sewed up a cute new skirt of my own design. Just a tube of cloth from a shirt with seams instead of raw edges. On the side seam I put two fancy stitches in. Just to flatten the extra fabric under the seam a little and to add a nice detail. When Karen saw me in the skirt she said it was totally hot, and I agree. We also invited Diana along. So we got all dolled up in tights and skirts and cute tops and lovely makeup.

After all that, Karen had misplaced her ID. Again. She constantly puts it somewhere else as opposed to the same spot for easy recovery. She said it might be in her car, which was parked off of Burnside. So we strutted our stuff over there and she still couldn't find it. So we decided to go with plan b. Which was to walk up to Fred Meyers, split the cost of some orange juice and cheap champagne and go back to the Goose and watch movies. Freddies had McVities as well. Mmm.

So we drank. Watched Futurama and MST3K: Catalina Caper. JP came down and visited for a bit. At first it seemed like two bottles wasn't enough but then Diana shared some shots from her private collection. Somewhere in the night Karen suggested jam comics. So I got some paper from my apartment and gel pens. What was comics turned into just drawing each other and getting more and more exaggerated. It was a great time, might have been a better time than if we had gone out. Most likely was a more drunker time. Man. My good gal pals walked me back to my apartment. I got into jammies and crawled into bed.

I'm still responsible, don't you worry.
