bad jokes and party boys

I didn't eat a tuna fish sandwich today. I know you guys were looking forward to it, but I didn't.

I was sifting through my anthropology books and got caught up and started reading about parallel cousins. Some cultures divide relationships up depending if your cousin is your mother's sister's kid or your mother's brother's kid. Very interesting. The Trobrianders are on my list.

The net went down for a few hours.

Katie and I went to Leaky Roof for another $3 cheeseburger and soda pop. We want to become regulars there so that when we show up, we can just say that we are having the usual.

Tom had his going away party tonight at Red Cap. He is going to Kansas City, just like Karen. The whole Katie's Crew was there. Phia, Casey, Death Luke, Other Luke, Miranda, Brandon. Tom's boyfriend was there and we talked about Kansas City. Lots of nice people there. The only problem with a gay bar is that there are so many cute boys but it's pointless to hit on them. But at least they are nicer. I only ordered drinks during the $1 well drink hour. Not strong, but still they were cheap. Talked with Casey, talked with Joel, talked with lots of the gang. I separated at around 12:45. I didn't feel up to the final call party. Still, have to stay awake so I can let Katie in.

Bought Gasoline before the gathering. Powell's is two blocks from Red Cap. I'm so excited to read it, it looks really good.

first day with no fob

Critique only took up the first chunk of class. I managed to haul my bike up the stairs and tuck it in the computer room for the day. Won't be fun to do this, but I'll manage. Gotta find that spare key.

Danny's was rendered so vividly. Solid colors and great detail. Kristen executed her fair in the hair with wonderful detail that didn't over power. Amanda's Shorty didn't quite convey hip hop. Chase's hens teeth had a great dialogue with the beak nosed woman in the picture, though the back ground was pretty Zoolander green. Madeline's Cockney slang had a wonderful rhythm in the chairs and stairs. Samala's was nice, if a bit small. My main critique was that I need to represent what makes me so unique. Coloring, poses, and all that was fine. Just need to find what makes a piece "me".

I met Bekka for lunch and we discussed the show we want to do. We will be creating 8 characters. We will each be drawing four and then when we finalize the drawings, we will switch and draw the other's characters. It's about showing our influence on each other and the main question will be who drew what character first? What separates our approaches. It will be colorful as well. Hurray for Bekka Hannesdottir! And Madeline. She's also cool. TV buddy unite!

After lunch, Martin French handed us some stacks of photocopies of portraits of artists. I misunderstood his directions a little bit and had trouble until I saw what other people were doing. Basically we were to take a single reference and create sketches, which would become the base for three 11x17 portraits of the same person. I drew Anita Loos and struggled. Then I drew Warhol and it turned out successful.

Our next three week assignment is: Ancient Aesthetic. The first phase is rough thumbnails. Pick two indigenous cultures and research them a little come up with 3 varied thumbnails for each. Gypsies, Mayans, what have you. I pulled out my anthropology text books and started browsing.

Lagged around and got everything sorted. Kristen helped me move my bike down the stairs. Up is easy, I don't like how it bounces going down.

Then I relaxed. Ate some cheese puffs. Ate some pasta. Watched some TV on the Internet. Flashforward is the show I'm most excited about. Everyone in the world blacks out for 2 minutes 14 seconds, and everyone sees 6 months into their future during that time. It's got a good cast that has a few people that were on Lost. Scifi, mystery, action. My kind of show.

Tomorrow plans: go to Powell's and buy Dame Darcy's Gasoline. Eat a tuna fish sandwich (my last jar from Tuna Claus). Look through Anthropology texts. Edit my memoir a little, just to get the easy stuff out of the way. Read. Sleep in. Watch Project Runway. Survey what is due next week.

Mom: what can you tell me about Gypsies?

slang assignment: spitroast (work in progress)

Work in progress.
A spitroast is a term for a threesome. The hotdogs are used to imply stuff. You know.
18"x24".
Higgins Sepia Calligraphy ink & Carter's washable blue ink on slightly toned paper.

well that sucks

History of Laughter covered... actually I am drawing a blank. We kind of went over the same stuff that we had gone over in class before. I know that I gave a good definition for the difference between dirt and earth (dirt is just earth that has been misplaced).

Bekka and I are making plans to have a little show in the PNCA library. Tomorrow during lunch we will sort out the details.

History of Printmaking was far more memorable. We looked at Durer and finished one of Morgan's books that have awesome etchings. Talked about St Jerome and how he beat himself with rocks because he was thinking of naked ladies.

For lunch, I took a trip to Trader Joe's. Bagels, bananas, apples, bread, pasta, and I grabbed three microwave meals that were like, 1.99 each. If I like them, then I will stock up on them. I need to stop buying lunches all together. It's adding up. Laziness costs! I also bought this PB & J candy bar. It was raspberry and peanut butter coated in chocolate. It was gluten free so I broke it in half and shared it with Diana.

The rest of the day was scheduled as this: 3:15-6:16 work on artwork. 6:30-8:00 yoga break to relax and rejuvenate. 8:20-2:30am art work time.

I got back at 3:15. I paused going into the elevator to talk to Jaymee as I left. In that pause my keys fell out of my hand.
They fell and slid perfectly into the crack in the elevator door.
Fell all the way down.
I don't like to swear in this blog but goddamnit, that shit sucked.
I went to the main office and told them. They called the elevator company and after discussions, there were three options given:
1: pay $105 to get the elevator people to come over and open the maintenance door and retrieve the keys.
2: pay $80 to replace the keys and hope I can find my spare Kryptonite bike lock key, otherwise that's another $30-40 for a new lock.
3: wait till the second week of October for the elevator check up.

The guy at the front desk was nice and loaned me a set of spares no cost. After years of torment, the Goose did something good. I'm going to wait for option 3. Tomorrow I'll go to the front desk and tell them this and sort out what I'll have to do when the time comes to get my keys. For the time being, I'll have to call Katie to let me in or wait for someone to do so. I'll also have to stash my bike somewhere safe on campus.

So I cried. And took a shower to relax. And at 4:30, I sat down and started drawing. I got one of the male figures roughed in and the other half way done when I left for yoga. Yoga was intense. Miss Mona was in the class, as well as Tam/Tatum. Two new faces. It was great to just focus on yoga and work out and sweat and stretch and squeeze the anxiety out of me. I returned relaxed and pretty content despite how much it sucks to loose your keys. I talked with Katie. And then sat down and drew and painted from 9:00-2:20, at which point, I took a break to write. I'm going to put the final touches on it now. Come morning, I'll remove the tape carefully with the aid of my hair dryer (it loosens the glue).

I'm really excited about this piece. Yeah it's suggestive, but it's fun. It also is what I like to do and I tried out a new method. It has some problems, but I'm here to learn. I'm excited for critique. I don't know how it will play out.

TV watched while working: Glee episode 4 (finally, it is up to parr with the pilot episode), So You Think You Can Dance (oi, can we get to Vegas already!), Lost (rewatching first season on Hulu, might rewatch more because it seems to have all of it on Hulu), and Peep Show (the characters are so delightfully sad and hilarious at the same time).

gotta...save money. must make my own meals.

I just noticed that I've been blogging in the "edit Html" section for over a year and a half now. I should be in the compose window. Now I can write and my text is in the nice font that it appears in on my blog. Whoo.

I forgot to mention that yesterday, my bike chain slipped off my bike and got jammed. I stopped outside of Hot Lips Pizza (the one near PGE Park) and struggled to pull the chain out of its jam. I was about ready to walk my bike to the Max, when a nice man emerged from Hot Lips and helped me flip my bike over. He proceded to help me remove the jam and get the chain back on the teeth. I thanked him and left feeling a lot better about Portlanders.

Alright. Today. Monotype. The first two hours (we went until lunch) was spent with a special guest. Tom the teacher's friend Tom. He showed us his portfolio and his monotypes and then gave us a demonstration. Honestly, I only liked about 3 of his monotypes. The rest seemed to blend together in terms of style.

I was planning on bagel + creme cheesing it for lunch but alas I was out of bagels. Safeway was the next, boring option. The by pound food rung up more than I expected but when I left, I noticed the guy did not beep my drink in the machine. He looked at the receipt so he knew that he only charged me for one thing. How nice. It was filling and carried me through the day. TOMORROW. Tomorrow I will go shopping. Pasta. Bagels. Meat slices.

Sat with Jon W. during lunch. Put up my yoga posters. Then I printed. I rendered my daberlack drawing on a big sheet of plexi. I muddled up the face when I was almost done and wasn't able to correct it to a point that satisfied me. Not quite happy with it, but oh well. Used up a full sheet of Rosaspina paper. Printed a triptych of three smaller square plates. Redrew some stuff from my sketchbook.

Left school at 5:15. Sweated. I am tired of it being hot. I keep dressing for it to be cold, but it never is. Relaxed for an hour. Drew for a few hours. Struggled to get the man poses down. When Katie came back, I took some photos. Now I am going to finish that up. Right now the net is down, but I'm hoping it will come back in the next few minutes.

have you ever considered not talking?

I did this morning without tea, go me. For the first hour and a half, Robin, Bryan, and I sat in a little group and critiqued each other's memoirs. Swap. Read. Fill in a sheet. Bryan and I had the smaller of the memoirs so we got through them right quick.

We broke for lunch and I went to get a burrito. Went for the cheaper, just bean variety. Didn't enjoy it as much as the chicken and Mr. Green Jeans wasn't on the special menu. Finished some writing during the break, scanned my sketches for the reading response, and got back to class.

Then we all put our memoir illustrations up on the wall for critique. Danny's was nostalgic and well unified. Mine was well received, aside from a few compositional quibbles, Bryan's digital gamer art worked well, Amanda/Allison/Why can't I remember her name's horses were some of the best out of the class (really strong illustrations), Kristen rendered the battle against dishes and moving quite nice, and this primary colored tryptich by a girl who I have only had this class with, well it blew us all away. Nothing but postivie comments, and understandably so. They fit well, the composition was perfect. Just great art to see. I didn't think too highly about some of the other pieces and I tried to voice that as nice as possible.

Daniel Duford came in to give us a little history about comics. We have to do a graphic chapter from our memoir. I'm sick of the thing, I don't want to do more stuff about it. And I don't like writing comics about myself. Oh well. It was a good history. Introduced me to some names I didn't know, but a lot was just a repeat of what I have learned from being a nerd. After his lecture, a few people got into a livid debate about animation and art and comics. It seemed strangely nasty considering the context. Still adjusting to some new, strong personalities.

Class was over right on the dot. I went to the other building and grabbed my yoga monoprint. I photocopied it much smaller, and in the photocopy I wrote in the dates and details for free yoga. It is twice a week now. The kind ladies in the library loaned me some highlighters to make the poster pop a little more. I plan to put them up tomorrow.

Returned home. Katie had gone to the Church of Scientology for her art & anthropology class. They had to go to a place that they felt uncomfortable and analyze it like an anthropologist. Katie returned with tons of pamphlets about dianetics and top secret recorded audio. She, Luke, and I watched the free DVD. Well, I watched the new episode of Mad Men and then joined them for crazy Scientologist antics. None of it was really clear how so many people got magically better, they just said that they did after reading the book. Just weird.

Then I watched the season premier of House. I also sketched out some things to possibly paint in class tomorrow. I think I shall retire early, even though I don't have to get up for 10 hours. Retire and read.

AAANNND it happened again. Right as I hit publish, my net went down. Thankfully for only 4 minutes and my post saved this time.

Karen: I want to go thrifing with you! p.s. OMG his foot!

oops, forgot about that other assignment

Got my two other paintings done. I could not find the photo of the apple press so I had to wing it from my imagination. It looks about right. I'm banking that no one else knows exactly what they look like. Heh. Halfway through the large painting, I remembered that trees are green and not brown. Thankfully the brown and green looks pretty good and probably a lot better than if they were solid green.

Morning was free pancakes at the RA's. I'm convinced that only fathers know how to make pancakes. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth but they were rather chewy. And there was no butter. Met some of the freshmen (or as we call them at PNCA "foundation"). Then it was work work work!

I'm writing now, in the event that the Internet goes kablooey again. They say they are working on it, but I don't really believe them that much.

Working on my memoir. More like staring at it and not knowing what to add to the crummy thing. When she first introduced it, I thought it would be the final project. You know, something after we have had a lot of practice writing. But some say it is easier to write a lot than a little. Still, it is a big chunk of writing. I don't really want to deeply analyze events, but it seems like I have to.

Remembered I had a Lyn Ward writing/drawing response due as well. Way too slacker this break. Hopefully I'll get into the rhythm soon. Another week or so.

argh

So last night the Internet went down about a minute before I was ready to post.

But that's okay, I didn't have much to say anyway. Worked on painting. Watched Cry Baby. Slept in. At left overs. Went to bed early.
