in company of pasta

A few days ago was my one year date of blogging, and this is my 400th post. Pretty rad, I just need to post more videos of things that I think are cool and beef up that number.

Cecine and I ventured out of the apartment today. We checked out Red Light and Ray's Ragtime in search of these lacy veil things that she has her eye on. No such luck. For dinner we went to Noodles & Company. The service was good but the food was just decent. Not some special magical noodles that would be the best ever like I expected them to be. Still, we tried something new. Afterwards we wandered around in Powell's for about an hour. I bought the new Psychology Today and a cheap, beat up copy of Palahniuk's Lullaby. Won't read it for a while but I figured I would get it while it was at a nice price. They had a buy 2, get the 3rd free sale on books but it only applied to new ones. Tempting but I held back. The Pearl room yielded no special art books. We caught the streetcar back, Cecine got a pint of Haagen Dazs from Safeway, and we were home to chill.

Been flowing through the Wire. Didn't read anything today but maybe when I retire to my bed I will. Tomorrow Cecine is getting her tattoo and I am going with her. Take some photos, maybe inquire about how much something I've been thinking of would cost (though any Trilltoo is years away from happening).

Last few days and then I'll be wondering where summer went.

a post without dancing cats

The Goose people are really good about slipping notices under our door in regards to things that only concern PSU students. However when it came to the laundry machine switch over, they only saw fit to tape up a single flier by the mail boxes to alert us. Couldn't be bothered to put something up in the laundry room itself, or on the bulletin boards on each level. Nooo, one little piece of paper was enough. So it wasn't until I had loaded up the machine with clothes and suds and went to slip quarters in did I notice it was a card only system. I saw the notice for the change when I went down to get a card so I could have clean undies. The machine only took dollars. I had to take out all the dry clothes and wash the soapy clothes in the bathtub. Grrr. The Goose staff are lame.

Brynne and Averie are going to be in Portland next weekend. The time they have to hang out is when I am scheduled to have class but maybe I will get out early. I hope so. I love visitors (mom, you haven't visited me yet. Dad has, Nathan and Rubie have, Llyw has, Brynne and Dan have, Jon from Japan has although he wasn't visiting me initially).

Read more from Time Traveler's Wife. Watched more of the second season of The Wire. Tomorrow I'll find an excuse to leave the apartment.

dancing kitties

MEG - Precious @ Yahoo! Video

The song isn't my favorite but I love the video.

guffaws and goons

Cecine and I went to see Pineapple Express. It was cookie cutter Apatow. Nothing really broke the mold except for the fact that it had more action. And the action was really good. The fights were well choreographed and seemed real and not that some slob suddenly got karate skills. The people around us were really into it and that was a little distracting. It was cute but forgettable.

Before we stopped by Art Media to view their wares. I am loaning Cece my cloth portfolio so that she doesn't have to buy the big kit. She doesn't have her ID yet so she didn't get anything. I bought some Iridescent Medium for watercolors (going to make everything all shiny now) and a new block of paper because I am almost out.

I took Cecine on the max for the first time. Nothing really eventful happened. It was the Max.

My dreams have been troublesome of lately. In a half awake state I was clawing at my bed looking for some action figures and yanked the plug from the socket for my clock, effectively turning it off. Well, I didn't need to wake up early today. I started The Wire but the disc is screwy. Errg.

Rode into PNCA to pick up the DVD's I loaned to Matt a few weeks ago. The Freshman orientation was in full swing. Lots of fresh faces that look really similar to the ones from last year. I talked to Gordon about what TBA events he suggests and which one (Paintallica) he was in.

I had to return Holly's collar to Chelsey so I stopped by her place for a visit. I took the collar off because it scared Ibanez and forgot to put it in her bag of things. She is much larger now. She did run up and charge my face when I was sitting. I also received a very snazzy quilt in thank you for my labors. I didn't stay long but her place really is coming together.

Trader Joe's was the destination of choice after. I crossed some lanes of traffic when we were all stopped and a car honked at me. He wasn't close to me, I didn't cut him off. He was about fifteen feet behind me and just decided to honk at me because I made him consider slowing down at a red light. He shouted something that I didn't catch. Oh well. I was starving so I treated myself to some Gnocchi with Gorgonzola. It was frozen and it seemed easy enough to prepare without a microwave. I found it very delicious and filling. The little gooey bits of Gnocchi were wonderful. Mmm, I will consider buying it again for future preparations. Bought some bread and mini tacos. A nice little trip. No one honked at me on the way back.

I cuddled the snakey Ganesh and watched Pushing Daisies.

we are too young to be polite

I kept relatively busy today. Doing something all day long.

I did a quick little picture and slipped it under Karen's door. Then it was time for our pod meeting. It seems a small pod. Izzy, Drew, Dylan, Michael, Jeff, Hill, Ionie, Cecine, a girl whose name I have forgotten, and myself make up the pod with Robin as our leader. It was just general rules and cookies. Ideas for what we wanted to do were brought up. It went quick.

Karen and Robin knocked on my door to say hi. Robin was busy but Karen was not so we went out for a brief walk. We rode the steetcar to PNCA. Karen bought lunch at Hot Lips where Brianna is working. She looks so Hot Lips, it seems a great fit. I checked out two AWESOME books from the library. One was Wall and Peace, which is a collection of Banksy's work with some of his words and ideas. The other is Obey, which is a seventeen year history of Shepard Fairey's work. I love his style. Karen and I oooed over it while waiting for the streetcar to arrive.

We chilled at Robin and Diana's for a while. Of course we chitted and chatted. I returned to my place briefly before going back to watch The Incredibles. That movie has so many great little elements and touches. Brad Bird is a genius. They played the movie a little quieter than I am used to. Some reason about setting a good example. It was like, 7:30pm. They could have turned it up a little.

I brought the rest of my cupcakes up to Karen's for a little rendezvous. Adam and Tony stopped by and the cupcakes were devoured. I did a drawing of the girl with the horrid pants whose clothing the Buffalo Exchange people loved. They went to see a movie at a beer theatre and I left. I think I'll read some more.

and then we had tiramisu

Oh wow. Karen + Adam + Robin + Diana + Me = up late talking about everything from how to fix education to how those glass panes are made and how they really ARE NOT old glass molecules sagging.

The night started with Adam making mushroom soup. Now I am not a mushroom person, nor am I a soup person but I am an Adam's Cooking person. It was thick and chewy and delicious. The conversation leaped into heavy territory pretty quick. A lot of ground was covered and many interruptions were had. Talking point 1: Doesn't glass alter over time because those old window panes have, like, the glass shifting downwards because those are the molecules shifting? Right? Answer: WRONG! Those panes have always looked like that because that is how the glass was made. The method was a type of spinning and created the waves. Now glass is formed by pooling liquid glass on top of liquid tin and then pushing the glass off of the tin. The cheaper the glass, the quicker it is pushed off of the tin. Talking point 2: However do we change the education system so we don't breed people who have no interest in learning? My idea: you have to change how parents raise their kids before they even get to preschool. And through school they need parents there to support them and help them. Kids need that and once kids have the proper support for learning outside of school, then the education system can be overhauled. Don't change it now because if they don't have home support, kids will have no interest no matter how high quality you make it. Yeah. Talking point 3: By signing up for a Social Security number, you are signing up to pay income tax. If you don't do that, you don't have to pay because you are not technically a part of the corporation that is the United States of America.

The housing orientation was this afternoon. Cecine and I walked to school and engaged in several slug bugs. We arrived early so I deposited my library books and caved and checked out the second season of The Wire. Diana snatched it from my hand when I entered but upon seeing that it was the second season, she gave it back to me.

In looking at the incoming students, I see a lot of echoes of my classmates. It was a lot of repetition and introduction. Phil, Chase, and Heather are also returning for another round of the Goose. I gave Heather a big lift up hug. Not many other people are from Washington. One guys last name is Champoux but it is pronounced Shampoo. A guy named Hill is into the same comics that I am, that was pretty cool. Actually Hill was really cool and really nice about introducing himself to everyone. There was a Tony that looks really familiar, and plenty of girls with various lengths of straightened hair. Yeah. We had a little lunch where Cece, Amelia, Phil and I ate our sandwiches outside. Charlie came by and we talked. I think we have History of Design together. Rad!

Getting back we did a large scale getting to know you game where we made fools of ourselves. We pointed at one another and said Viking, Star Wars, or Dinosaur and in teams of three we had to make the motion based on who was pointed it. If you were pointed at you had to do horns, Jabba, or a long neck, if you were on the right you had to paddle on the right side, be a Cantina musician, or a T-Rex, and if you were on the left you had to paddle on the left, be a Jedi (or a Sith), or be a Raptor. You also had to make noises. Insane fun. It took a little while to warm up but near the end was plenty of mad running about. Some people were too cool for it but eh, their loss.

On the way back, Cecine and I stopped in Cargo and poked at all the sweet imports. I bought the shoe door hanger from Storables. With the space that opened up I moved some of the boxes that were cluttering my room into my closet. Hopefully they won't remain there till I move out. We also checked out Anthropologie for a few minutes. Marvelous place. I almost want to get something from Ikea so I can modify it with handles from Anthropologie. But I'll leave that styling to Karen.

We caught the streetcar on the way back. Nice to show Cece just how easy Portland is. I stocked up on sunflower seeds from Plaid Pantry and we returned to our abode. We spent an hour pouring over the magazines I have dug out of the recycling. There was some cutting of images and commenting on how puffy vests DO NOT go under suit jackets (what the hell GQ?). The words "I'd tap that" and "golly" were uttered.

Harold and Maude was playing at the Metro for a one night only revival. I forgot about it for most of the day and were it not for Jackie reminding me at the orientation, I would have forgot. She unfortunately could not join us but Robin tagged along. About five other Goosies showed up at the theatre and we sat in one big chunk. That was cool. Ed Wood has been pushed back another week and next week is Me, You, and Everyone We Know. I don't know if I will go.

I really liked the movie. It was darkly hilarious and a really sweet love story. I don't really know why it took me so long to see this movie. Mom, did you not like Harold and Maude when it came out in '71? I also liked how it was an old print and so the quality was not perfect. It gives a nice touch to seeing a movie on the screen versus a remastered DVD.

The three of us separated from the others on the way back and got there a few seconds before they did. We went west then south, they went south then west.

I relaxed for about fifteen minutes before it was soup and discussion time.

a book, as in no pictures

I love the rain. I love the smell of it. I love the sound of it. I love the way it makes everything look when it is finished. Sure I don't enjoy biking in it, but there was none of that today so I'm all well and good.

I started reading Time Traveler's Wife. It is a pretty easy read. Some things I'm not so keen on but that is mostly because I am not really into the romantic genre. I like not having to strain through the sentences. Most of the strain comes from envisioning all that is described and as it isn't so setting heavy, I can relax a little. As I read it, I think the casting for the movie is spot on. Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams both can play and look a wide age range, so that fits nicely with the story. Too bad it comes out at the same time as Quantum of Solace.

Other than that I watched more Pushing Daisies. I don't know what happened to my painting, I was doing so good for a moment. Also watched a bit of Snatch. I seem to forget how great that movie is until I watch it again.

amaZINE

I've started to get into Pushing Daises. Lee Pace is in it. It is a cute concept for a mystery/romance. I'm only two episodes in. It is a ncie pace from all the heavy shows that I have been watching.

I got an email from the financial aid lady. I don't quite understand what she is talking about, it needs another looksie.

Jen called me up and got me out of the house for the Zine Symposium at PSU. It was crowded with hipsters. There were some nice looking gents there but in general, it was hipster city (which Portland is in general). One guy sort of forced his over priced comic in my hand to look at and seemed to take offense when I didn't want to buy it. Yeah, good way to make a sale there buddy. The Robopocalypse people had one and a half tables. They were all smiles and happy to see me there. There was minimal summer catching up. I was wearing my Thompson and Thompson tee and that was a great conversation opener.

I only had a twenty with me so my spending my limited. I bought a wonderful mini art book with great printing and line work, a smaller but wonderfully lined booklet, some zines about Wilhelm Reich, postcards that were Max Ernst reprints (seven for three bucks, amazing deal), and a two for four thing that also, you guessed it, had great lines. I look for in my zines: printing quality, rich lines, quality art, and overall presentation. Just because they are zines is no reason for them to be crap.

One guy I met at Stumptown I talked to, I wonder if he found it nice or creepy that I remembered him? If people didn't seem willing to talk to me, I didn't hang around their tables long enough to consider buying anything. The sure fire way to snag me in is to compliment my helmet.

Zines are cool, they are the thing to do to get out there.

Afterwards, I just went home.

My neighbour Drew and Amelia (Emelia?) knocked on my door. I made pot stickers but Amelia/Emelia left before they were finished. Drew hung around for a long while. We played with Cecine's snakes and watched some Youtube stuff. We, Drew and I, share a wall. He seems pretty nice. His stories of his various injuries made me think of Dad.

Speaking of Dad, I guess he got bored with making the truck more fuel efficient and made a hydraulic wood splitter. And here I was getting ready for some serious wood chopping action (when I visit home in 2012).
